Karuna (originally a Pali word; also regarded as a Sanskrit word) is the Jainist concept of love. In Tibetan, it is "snying-rje". It is also translated as "compassion," a key concept of Mahayana Buddhism (see Bodhisattva and Avalokitesvara). As mercy, it is the special kindness shown to those who suffer. It is considered the indispensable complement to enlightened wisdom or Prajña. Compassion is important in all schools of Buddhism.
Karuna is commonly summed up as wisdom tempered with compassion.

The Karuna Foundation
Based in Sydney, Australia. Its mission is to identify community based projects to help children in developing countries. Through local partnerships, projects are developed to provide basic food, clothing and shelter plus access to education that will ultimately lead to an improved quality of life for each child. With this support, children will have a better chance to achieve their life’s full potential. Importantly each project must be locally supported by its community to foster local participation that ultimately achieves sustainability. Karuna's initial project is based in the remote rural areas of Cambodia.
How can we help? Friends of Karuna will be able to help by offering resources in the way of specialist skills and equipment such as computers and books, or by funding groups of children, care workers, teachers, and other development initiatives such as the sinking of wells, tree plantation and food programs.
