Saw III, is the third installment in the horror film series. The film is a joint effort of both Saw 's writers/directors, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, and Saw II 's writer/director, Darren Lynn Bousman. Saw III follows the previous film's antagonist the Jigsaw Killer (more commonly known as Jigsaw), along with his new apprentice Amanda, as they painfully teach their victims to appreciate life.

The film has been dedicated to Gregg Hoffman, producer of the first two movies. Hoffman died on December 4, 2005, shortly after the official Lions Gate announcement of Saw III.

Saw III is rated R for Strong Grisly Violence and Gore, Sequences of Terror and Torture, Nudity and Language according to the official website. This will be the first film of the Saw franchise to have nudity.

Plot

Template:Spoiler Jigsaw has vanished. Now aided by his new apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith), the puppet-master behind the cruel, intricate games that have terrified a community and baffled police has once again eluded capture and vanished. While city detectives scramble to locate him, Dr. Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh) is unaware that she is about to become the latest pawn on his vicious chessboard. One night, after finishing a shift at her hospital, Lynn is kidnapped by the deranged Amanda and taken to an abandoned warehouse where she meets Jigsaw, (a.k.a John Kramer) (Tobin Bell), who's now bedridden and on the verge of death. Lynn is told that she must keep the madman alive for as long as it takes Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), another of his victims, to complete a game of his own. Racing against the ticking clock of Jigsaw's own heartbeat, Lynn and Jeff struggle to make it through each of their vicious tests, unaware that Jigsaw and Amanda have a much bigger plan for both of them.

Production

Saw III began production on May 1, 2006 in Toronto, Canada in preparation for the films October release. The final shooting draft of the script was written in under a week in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, by Leigh Whannell based on an idea by creator and Saw director James Wan. According to director, Darren Bousman, the fans of the "House of Jigsaw" Message board heavily influenced this film, as a trap mentioned in the forums is being used in this film. [citation needed]

Template:Spoilers Lynn is a mother in her 30's, kidnapped by Jigsaw due to certain "dark secrets" she has kept from her loved ones.

Jeff is a father grieving over the death of his son. Even though the death was an accident, Jeff has never been able to forgive himself. A few of Jigsaw's other victims have had something to do with Jeff's son's death in one way or another, giving Jeff a choice in his part of the game - either help them or watch as they die a slow, painful, and, in Jeff's mind, well-deserved death.

Traps

The "Ice Shower" trap featuring Jeff (Angus Macfadyen) and Danica (Debra McCabe).

The largest part of the Saw franchise is the traps Jigsaw plans out for his victims, and Saw III is not short of them.

Twisting Crucifix

The first official trap was Twisting Crucifix. The victim's head, arms, and legs are attached to a metal machine in the shape of a cross as the victim screams for help. Each end is able to twist 360 degrees, taking the victims head, arms, and legs along for the ride by spinning him around.

Drowning Pool

A man is chained by his neck onto the floor in a silo of sorts. Intestines and other body parts are then cut up and poured into the silo thus drowning him in pig organs and fluids. As he thrashes and screams, Jeff is shown above him holding some kind of remote.

Ice Shower

Danica is shown hanging by her arms in a room where two identical vertical poles spray her naked body with cold water as she screams and attempts to regulate her breathing. Jeff is standing in a doorway near her with a rather frightened expression and looking off in the distance. More than likely, this is one of the women associated with Jeff's son's death, and Jeff has the choice to save her or let her freeze to death.

Body Chains

The "Body Chains" trap featuring Troy (J. LaRose).

This trap featured Troy, who finds himself in an empty, forgotten classroom. He is soon greeted by Billy, Jigsaw's puppet, on a television screen. Billy reveals that Troy had been in and out of prisons for quite a time and if he wishes to live, he must break free of the chains before the timer stops. If time runs out, a bomb in the room will detonate. His shackles, though, are bound through various areas of skin on his body, including his lower jaw, shoulders, arms, hands, and legs. As the timer starts, he painfully pulls the chain rings through his skin, but the seconds tick away and the timer nears the end as Troy struggles to free himself.

Unknown Traps from the Teaser Trailer

  • Kerry is hanging from the ceiling in something that looks like a leather belt strapped around her body and neck, attached to several chains in the ceiling. Hanging next to her is a jar containing an unknown green liquid.
  • Lynn is screaming for help while tied to a chair and she seems to have removed her cloth gag. She is shown with a harness-like trap on, with what looks like shotgun shells pointing towards her neck.
  • Jeff is sitting in a small box, banging and kicking and screaming, "Let me out!" A small amount of light seeps through the cracks.
  • In the new trailer, a mannequin head is shown being blown up by the Reverse Beartrap, and you can see Lynn in the background. She jumps up in the air as the Beartrap springs open, destroying the wooden mannequin head.

Trivia

  • According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), the producers of Saw III asked the producers of Scary Movie 4 if they could use their version of the Saw bathroom for Saw III, as it was an exact replica of the other two bathrooms used for Saw and Saw II, which were both dismantled. This means that the infamous bathroom will once again be shown in Saw III. This was also confirmed by the makers on the Scary Movie 4 commentary.
  • The film was so anticipated by the fans, that the teaser trailer that was placed in front of the film "The Descent" was bootlegged and published online on the day of release.
  • A scene from Saw III was going to be shown when the action/thriller film Crank opened in theaters on September 1. However, the MPAA did not allow the preview, due to the scene's reportedly large amount of gore. This was the same reason behind the teaser trailer for the movie being removed from the official Saw III site.
  • The official site for the movie has recently added an interesting sound effect, resembling that of a heart monitor, which begins to flat-line if the user's cursor doesn't move enough on screen. This effect plays a large part in the movie, as Jeff Reinhart must "play against the time of Jigsaw's own heartbeat."
  • In the new Saw III trailer, a flashback can be seen of Jigsaw attaching the "Reverse Bear" trap to Amanda. Also, if you look carefully, there is a shot of Lynn holding some cutting tool (possibly for Jigsaw - you can see a drip behind her in the room)
