Allen Stoneham

Allen Henry Philip Stoneham, who was born in 1856, was a son of the late Mr. Allen Stoneham, Financial Secretary of the Board of Trade.[1]

He was educated at the Citv of London School and at London University, and during his youth was a prominent athlete, gaining many L.A.C. and other prizes. He won the Civil Service Quarter Mile Handicap.

He also played rugby for the Queen's House Football Club, one of the twenty-one founding members of the Rugby Football Union.[2]

He was responsible for the introduction of electric tramways into Western Australia and Victoria, and was the donor of the statue of Queen Victoria to the City of Perth, W.A.[1]

In 1902 Allen Stoneham and John Whitley bought land in Northern France, through their company Le Touquet Syndicate Ltd, and were instrumental in developing the town into the golf and gambling resort in Le Touquet.[3] From 1902 until his death in 1927 he devoted himself to the development of Le Touquet.

On the outbreak of the World War 1 he offered the the domain of Le Touquet for the use of the British Army. For his services Mr. Stoneham received the O.B.E.
