Sir Hugh Cortazzi GCMG retired as British ambassador to Japan in 1984, but has since been a leading scholar and promoter of better relations between Britain and Japan. He has written many books on the history of Anglo-Japanese relations and Japanese history. He also writes regularly in the Japan Times.

His autobiography is Japan and Back, and places elsewhere (Global Books Ltd.) ISBN 1901903206.
