Drake & Josh is a Nickelodeon sitcom that stars Drake Bell as Drake Parker and Josh Peck as Josh Nichols. Both stars are from The Amanda Show, as is Nancy Sullivan, who plays Audrey Parker-Nichols. Miranda Cosgrove from School of Rock and Yours, Mine and Ours (which also starred Drake Bell) plays Megan Parker, Drake's sister.

Drake & Josh debuted on January 11, 2004.

Overview and general information

Drake & Josh is about the various antics of two teenage boys living in a suburb of San Diego, California with contrasting personalities, who become stepbrothers when Josh's father, Walter Nichols, portrayed by Jonathan Goldstein, marries Drake's mother, Audrey Parker, who is played by Nancy Sullivan.

Drake is a popular guy who likes to play the guitar and sing in his band. He also likes to date as many girls as possible, and he doesn't care much about things like homework. Josh is more of a responsible, studious character, who likes magic tricks and has a big crush on his idol Oprah. Because of their differences there are many problems that are used for episode topics. The show also features their sister, Megan Parker (Drake's birth sister) played by Miranda Cosgrove, who loves torturing her older brothers with her pranks.

At Nickelodeon's 2006 Kids' Choice Awards, Drake & Josh won the orange blimp-award for Favorite TV Show.

Drake Bell also won for Favorite TV Actor.

Theme song

The theme song for the show is "I Found a Way", written by Drake Bell and Michael Corcoran and performed by Bell. A split-second shot of Bell singing the theme song from one episode in season one is seen in the opening sequence for seasons one and two, whilst another filmed version remains for season 3. The song can also be found on the show's official soundtrack, Drake & Josh: Songs from and inspired by the hit TV show, and on Drake Bell's album, Telegraph.

Drake Parker (played by Drake Bell)

Drake shares a bedroom with his stepbrother Josh, and sometimes blame each other into various schemes launched by Drake's sister, Megan. Drake currently does not work, and appears to have a habit of "collecting" as many girlfriends as possible.
Even though he has poor grades in all of his subjects, it has been implied that Drake has an aptitude for math; he received 87 on his algebra test (after studying past 2 AM). In addition to this, Drake managed to calculate how long they could ride the Demonator and get home before their parents in the episode The Demonator (when asked by Josh how he could figure that out and still be failing math, Drake replied, "Because this is important."). However, there is a contradiction to his "math skill"; he is seen forgetting and misplacing a decimal in a division problem. Like when they get asked if they would sell Gary Grills he says that they would make $8,000 for each grill they sell when 1 only costs $39.95. He appears to be skilled in chemistry, albeit with the help of Josh. Drake also speaks French fluently. Preferring to just relax and play his guitar, Drake merely does not bother to put any effort into his studies, or much of anything else, including mispronouncing "South America" as South (AH-mar-EE-kah), not sure what does transcript and dehydrated means, thinks there ever was an Old Hampshire and Old Jersey, thinks Vietnam is in New Jersey, and coming up with medical excuses featuring impossible medical problems (such as "twisting his liver" so that he could no longer read, write, or bathe).
Drake regularly performs and rehearses with his band (he plays lead guitar). His favorite band is the fictional Zero Gravity, whose lead guitarist Devin Malone he met backstage at one of the group's concerts.

Josh Nichols (played by Josh Peck)

Josh moved into Drake's house when his dad married Drake's mother in 2004. Since that time, Josh has acquired a job at The Premiere, a movie theater in which he has always wanted to work (see Movie Job). Josh thinks that Drake lacks responsibility and always gets annoyed by Drake's bad habits, such as having a party at Josh's boss' house or ruining his relationship with his date. His birthday is revealed to be February 23 and that Josh is the elder of the two.
Josh has a girlfriend, Mindy Crenshaw - however, the two did not always get along; starting at 12 years old, the two often battled against each other in their school's annual Science Fair. It was only until Mindy and Josh paired up for a project in their class that they discovered they liked each other.
Josh once had a pet turtle named Sheldon, who died when he was five years old, and was replaced by a lizard named Julio. He also appears to have a transmitter on his backside which Megan uses for the amusement of electrocuting him. Josh is also shown to be an obsessive fan of Oprah Winfrey; he has a photograph and a large cardboard cut-out of Winfrey, and, in Josh Runs into Oprah, accidentally hits her with his car then gets a restraining order; now he cannot get within 300 feet of her.
While Josh is highly known for being very school-smart, getting A's in all of his classes, he is by no means street-smart. Examples of this are when, in the episode The Affair, when Drake tells Josh that he thinks that their dad is seeing another woman, Josh replies blankly, "Seeing another woman do what?". In the beginning of the episode Pool Shark, Josh refers to pool as billiards, which most people, obviously, don't. And, before Drake pointed out that both were wrong, Josh thought that being the Equipment Manager on their school football team counted as being on the team, and that it was cool.
Josh is allergic to rather random items, such as celery, cats, shrubs, and cheese puffs. He had perfect attendance from pre-school days to the eleventh grade. He can play the harmonica, slide whistle, and piano. While Drake is shown as a poor driver, Josh most likely is not (in one episode, however, he drove past a stop sign). He is not very good at sports: in basketball, the ball hits his face repeatedly; in football, he failed tryouts; he also had to use twelve training wheels to learn to ride on a bike properly.
Every day Josh is tortured by Megan or Drake, by being hit, abused or taken for granted, and even Drake sells his bike and stereo for money for himself, and steals his money. His boss, Helen, has a tendency to ignore Josh and quips him often. He has the knack of getting himself in scrapes that Drake causes on purpose and is always blamed and hurt painfully.
It is commented in the episode "First Crush" that Josh has a talent for drawing (he draws a portrait of his crush, Kathy). However, this talent is never brought up again. Josh is great at pool (this is commented on in "Pool Shark" and brought up again in "Drew and Jerry" ). It is said various times that Josh likes magic as well as video games.

Megan Parker (played by Miranda Cosgrove)

Megan is Drake's sister and has a mass supply of spyware. She is known to get her brothers into various accidents and schemes; she has said that her spare time consists of new ideas to prank both Drake and Josh. These include purchasing a sheep over the internet and later acting as if she hadn't seen it before, thus framing her brothers. Another example of Megan's numerous pranks is putting a bomb into Josh's salsa and making it explode, again framing her brothers. Megan also has her own website. She plays the oboe and soccer. Her only weaknesses are that she is very ticklish and allergic to cats; Josh shares the same allergy (although in Honour Council she is seen holding one). She also hates being carried and doesn't want her parents to find out what she's really like.

Audrey Parker-Nichols (played by Nancy Sullivan)

Audrey is Drake's birth mother. Her profession is never specified. She always treats Megan like a "little angel", unaware of her daughter's large–and growing–collection of spyware and ability to fool her brothers. Audrey is known to give in to Drake's requests, though it is usually "somewhere between the fourteenth and seventeenth time" Drake has asked her.

Walter Nichols (played by Jonathan Goldstein)

Walter is Josh's birth father, and he is a weatherman at the local TV station. Walter had almost become the weatherman for Good Morning Today, however, he did not get the job; Drake and Josh, thinking that the senior producer of the program was having an affair with Walter, ended up throwing food on her, thus ending Walter's chance of becoming "the most watched weatherman in America". His rival is Bruce Windchill, whom both Megan and Audrey seem to have crushes on. Usually, he doesn't want anyone in the house to mention his name.
Walter thinks ships do not sink, as well as believing that the film Titanic (1997) was not based on a true story. He is allergic to cumin and seems to forget his wife's birthday. He is somewhat absentminded. The outside members of the family seen on the show, Grammy and Papa Nichols, are from his side of the family.

Helen Dubuois (played by Yvette Nicole Brown)

Helen Dubuois was introduced in Movie Job as the manager at The Premiere, a movie theater where Josh has a job. Helen is known for her loud voice and orders for her employees, namely Josh. Whilst Helen is not particularly fond of Josh, she seems to adore Drake, even saying in one episode, "Drake Parker, I love you like the son I never wanted.". Helen was a child actress when she was younger, as mentioned in the episode Helen's Surgery, in the (fictional) show Happy Times. Primarily played by Yvette Nicole Brown, the character was played by Frances Callier in the episode Little Diva.

Mindy Crenshaw (played by Allison Scagliotti-Smith)

Mindy Crenshaw was introduced in season two as Josh's foremost "enemy"; she had beaten Josh at their school's Science Fair every year. However, in her next appearance (Mindy's Back), the couple realized that they actually liked each other. The two had been dating for a while before Josh finally met her parents. A dinner at Mindy's parents house was, all in all, a disaster, as was the majority of the dinner at Josh's house. Despite this, Mindy's parents have allowed her to continue dating Josh. Mindy told Josh she loved him, and seeing as the sience fair was coming up, Josh foolishly believed that was a tactic to make him faal the need to let her win. When the science competition actually came up, they both invented photon cannons and Josh's out performs Mindy's so Josh won. Josh then confronted Mindy telling her he "knew" what she was trying to do by telling him she loved him. She then revealed the hidden power of her cannon which showed that SHE actually let JOSH win and was sincere about what she said. Then the two agreed that they are inexperienced at dating and felt that they rushed things so they agreed to see other people to see if they were truely the right people for eachother but are still friends.

Mrs. Hayfer (played by Julia Duffy)

Mrs. Alice/Linda Hayfer was first seen in the episode Mean Teacher as Drake and Josh's English teacher. Mrs. Hayfer dislikes Drake because of his poor efforts in school and lack of responsibility. She displays this by reminding him that she hates him and counting all his answers wrong, even if they are based on his opinion or correct; an example of this is when Mrs. Hayfer asked Drake what his favorite 20th century novel was. When Drake replies, "Catcher in the Rye," she says, "Wrong." And also, when Mrs. Hayfer asked Drake in class "In which language was the Odyssey written?" Drake (correctly) answers that the Odyssey was written in Greek. To this, Mrs. Hayfer again snaps, "Wrong!" An instant later, another student was called on and also answered (again, correctly) "Greek," and Mrs. Hayfer counted that answer as "Correct!", even though Drake said the same thing.
Mrs. Hayfer always reminds Drake that she hates him, but she seems to be fond of Josh because of his truthfulness (and probably his good grades and overall responsibility, all of which Drake lacks). Her husband, Gerald, works at the Little Sibling foundation. Drake once had dated Mrs. Hayfer's daughter, Kelly.
It is revealed in the episode "Vicious Tiberious" that Mrs. Hayfer is originally from New Jersey, and is a bad comedian (at the beginning of the episode she makes a pun about Mark Twain and, after nobody laughs, yells, "Why don't you people ever laugh at my jokes?" And it is also shown later in the episode that she was once on a comedy contest show called Search for the Stars (an intentional writer parody of Star Search) and she is just as uncomedic then as she is now). In that episode, Drake points out to Josh the framed picture he is holding of Miss New Jersey some time back in da day, saying: "Woah, this girl is seriously hot." Upon seeing the picture, Josh (with a grin on his face) points out to Drake that "That's Mrs. Hayfer."

Eric (played by Scott Halberstadt) and Craig (played by Alec Medlock)

Eric and Craig are two stereotypical 'nerdy' honor students that are always being exploited by Drake and Josh, mostly due to Drake's hare-brained schemes. The character of Eric was introduced before the character of Craig; Eric has made more appearances in the show than Craig. Both characters have been mentioned as being Jewish. Even though Josh took advantage of them as much as Drake did, in the episode Josh Runs Into Oprah, Josh, Craig and Eric are seen as being good friends.(Despite Josh not being stated as "un-popular, anymore)

Gavin (played by Jake Farrow)

Gavin is an employee at The Premiere movie theater. He has a mullet-like haircut and is always telling Josh to clean something unusual in the theater bathrooms. He then eventually cleans up the mess himself - his response (and catch-phrase) being "I got it". The so-called messes included a wig stuck in a toilet bowl and a diaper stuck on a wall. He is quite a lazy employee, and has been known to take naps on the roof of the theater.

Dr. Glazer (played by Roark Critchlow)

Dr. Jeff Glazer lives across the street from Drake and Josh. He is always called on whenever a serious emergency happens at their house. Although he seems kind during the medical procedure, he is always charging a high bill for his services. He charged $300 for inspecting Drake's rash in The Bet, $500 for putting child star Ashley Blake to sleep in Little Diva, and $100 for explaining how a lamb got in Drake and Josh's room in Sheep Thrills with a $50 extra to not tell their parents there was a sheep in their room.

Grammy (played by Randee Heller)

Grammy Nichols is Josh's grandmother. In her first appearance (Grammy), Drake dislikes her at first, because she doesn't respect him fairly. However, by the end of the episode, he starts to be more respective of her for returning his money that he gave her earlier during a bet between the two.
Grammy also has been known to send Josh various presents and gifts; on one occasion, she gave Josh a Gamesphere three months prior to its release. She is also mentioned as having hormonal imbalances in the episode Playing the Field, most notably a moustache - Drake makes fun of this, with Josh defending her. Although the character is mentioned frequently by both Drake and Josh, Grammy has only appeared once, in the aforementioned episode Grammy. She later appears in a season 4 episode titled 'Tourney Blues'.

Papa Nichols

Papa Nichols is Josh's great-grandfather and is the father-in-law of Grammy. He is 81 years old and had surgery before the events of The Demonator and was on heavy medication that made him relive World War II during the episode. He mistook Eric and Craig (who were looking after him at the time) for two Nazi soldiers (managing to attack them both), mistook his bedroom slipper for a walkie-talkie, and thought Eric's cell phone was a weapon. He also punched his son at the end of the episode because the medication had not yet worn off, and then ran off saying, "I got you, you stinking German," and chants "USA! USA! USA!"

Rina (played by Molly Orr)

Rina is a member of Drake's band, and plays bass guitar. The character is played by Molly Orr, who was a member of The Amanda Show cast, appearing in the Moody's Point sketches as Misty Raines; Drake & Josh is a spin-off of The Amanda Show, which were both created by Dan Schneider.

Paul (played by Jeremy Ray Valdez)

Paul is a member of Drake's band, and plays rhythm guitar.

Scottie (played by Johnny Lewis)

Scottie Wilson is the drummer for Drake's band and is shown to be unintelligent. He has one brother, Trevor, who seems to be as unintelligent as Scottie himself. In the episode Megan's New Teacher, Drake mentions that he needs a new drummer to replace "Mitch" - Scottie is not mentioned in this episode, and only appeared during season one.

Trevor (played by Taran Killam)

Trevor Wilson is one of Drake's friends and is Scottie's brother. He appears to be as unintelligent as Homer Simpson, like his brother. He gave Drake and Josh a dune buggy, which he "fixed" himself. His parents make him take a head examination every month. He is often mentioned, but so far he has only appeared in Dune Buggy.

Later seasons

The fourth season, which contains 20 episodes, premiered on September 24, 2006 with the episode Josh Runs into Oprah. The fourth season is rumored to be the last, but it hasn't been confirmed.

Drake Bell was involved in a car accident in Los Angeles on a freeway exit in December 2005; three episodes of the fourth season were filmed prior to the accident, and production of the rest of the episodes was postponed until Bell healed from his injuries. Production of the show resumed in March 2006 and continued into July. [1]

Trivia

  • The high school that Drake and Josh go to, Belleview, is the name (parodied) of the real-life Bellevue High School of Bellevue, Washington, notorious for ending De La Salle High School's 151-game football winning streak. Belleview is also the name of a high school in South East Texas. It is worth noting that Belleview contains Drake Bell's like name. This may or may not be intentional.
  • It was revealed in The Foam Finger that the boys first met briefly when they were both eight years old at a baseball park. They both got into a fight over buying a foam finger at a stand. Drake and Josh met again in the fourth grade when Josh wanted to show Drake a magic trick. They did not particularly like each other, as Drake was the "cool kid" in school and Josh sat at the "loser table" at lunch.
  • Drake and Josh have kissed each other a grand total of four times on Nickelodeon over the years. The first time was in an episode of All That (with musical guest Bare Naked Ladies). The second was when Drake kissed Josh on the cheek, in a broom closet, in the episode "Smart Girl". The third was when Josh gave Drake a "Yudonian hello" in "We're Married". And the forth being when Josh kissed Drake on the lips for a "prolonged period of time" in " Josh Runs into Oprah".
  • In the episode "Vicious Tiberius", Walter is seen exercising while singing along to Drake Bell's song "Highway To Nowhere". This song was also heard on a season 1 episode of Zoey 101.
  • In the episode "The Guitar", Josh must purchase a new Fender Stratocaster for Drake after accidentally destroying his previous one. When leaving "Guitar World", a poster on the wall is advertising a film called Super Market Cop III. This is a reference to a fictional movie that was featured in Kenan & Kel, a similar Nickelodeon program.
  • The program parodies several films on posters outside on the marquee as well as the posters inside the theater for spoofs on The Empire Strikes Back with The Empress Fights Back (which includes the logo from that film on the poster) and A Walk to Remember with A Walk to Forget, Finding Texas parodies Finding Neverland, and The Six Cents parodies The Sixth Sense among many others, including Puppet Fever, Ick Glokmah, Buckets of Blood, Ghost Monsters, Monsters From the Drain, Hobo: The Movie, TV the Movie and Doggy Prom. They have also done TV the Movie which is actually a movie coming out.
  • In a few episodes, in scenes of the camera closing in on The Premiere, there is a wide enough angle showing a building to its right, appropriately named Schneider's Bakery, the company of Drake & Josh creator, Dan Schneider. However, in "Movie Job", the sign above the building reads Schneider's Pizza. In several exterior shots of buildings, you can see the word "Schneider" in the name. Examples include "St. Schneider's Hospital" in Paging Dr. Drake and "The Four Schneiders Hotel" in The Drake and Josh Inn. Schneider himself appears in the latter episode, as "Mr. Oldman", a character he played on The Amanda Show (another show he created).
  • In "Honor Council", it is revealed that Megan has a website, MeganParker.com. In the video on her website, on the right, you can see Emma Roberts as her Unfabulous character Addie Singer. However, the actual website is just an image. Interesting to note is that in the actual episode, there is a link on Megan's website that says "Boob clip of the week", however, the website in real life refers to it as "Funny clip of the week".
  • There is a Parker street that meets with Nichols street in Ludlow, Massachusetts. "Parker" and "Nichols" are Drake and Josh's last names, respectively.
  • Drake has used different guitars in the seasons. He has used a Fender Stratocaster and two Gibson Les Paul's (one Wine Red, one Ebony) along with many acoustics, and an archtop.
  • The made for TV movie Drake & Josh Go Hollywood, creates somewhat of a paradox because when Josh is watching a video on his computer, the clip is from Zoey 101 (episode 9 called Spring Fling), which featured Drake Bell as himself. This, in itself, nevermind the episode of Zoey 101 in which the gang is watching an episode of Drake & Josh, tells us that Drake & Josh is simply a show, however the show Drake & Josh has never broken the fourth wall, so it's real to those characters. This strikes the question, is this a tv show within a show, or simply a regular show?

Merchandise

There is a soundtrack, Drake & Josh: Songs from and inspired by the hit TV show, that was released on March 8, 2005 on Nick Records.

Four episodes from season one have been released on a DVD titled Suddenly Brothers. A second volume, titled Suddenly Family was planned to be released on September 13, 2005 [2], but was withdrawn for unknown reasons. On January 31, 2006, Drake & Josh Go Hollywood was released on DVD, with two episodes from the beginning of the third season included as bonus material ("Helen's Surgery" and "Mindy's Back".) Also, the episode "We're Married" was included in the TEENick Picks DVD.

There are a series of Drake & Josh chapter books. The books are entitled Go Hollywood, Blues Brothers, and Sibling Rivalry. These books are based on (in full or part) episodes from the series.
