Luscious Jackson is an all-woman band formed in 1991 in New York City. They performed a style of alternative music that combined hip hop, punk, folk and dance. The band is named for a basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers (Lucious Brown "Luke" Jackson).

History

The band members are Kate Schellenbach (drums), Jill Cunniff (vocals, bass), Gabby Glaser (vocals, guitar), and Vivian Trimble (keyboards, vocals). Schellenbach and Cunniff met while Schellenbach was drummer for the Beastie Boys whom Cunniff was interviewing for her zine. They all frequented shows at downtown Manhattan haunts like CBGB's, Hurrah, Tier 3, and Max's Kansas City. Their mutual appreciation of Bad Brains, the Slits, ESG, Funky Four Plus One More, Afrika Bambaata, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five led to friendship.

In early 1991, Jill and Gabby created the first Luscious Jackson demo with tip money with their first live performance later that year opening for Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill at the now-defunct Building in lower New York City. The Beastie Boys ask Luscious Jackson to be the first band on their Grand Royal label.

In 1992, three tracks from the original Luscious Jackson demo and four new songs are released as the In Search Of Manny EP. Later that summer they had their first headlining show the Wetlands club.

Trimble and Cunniff released a side project under the name Kostars in 1996. Tired of touring on the road, Trimble left Luscious Jackson in 1998 after the group's second full-length album, Fever In Fever Out in order to pursue other musical projects. The group produced an additional album, titled Electric Honey, as a trio, but they disbanded in 2000.[1] Vivian Trimble and Josephine Wiggs (formerly of The Breeders) released an album under the name Dusty Trails in 2000.

In October of 2006, Jill Cunniff releases her first solo album since the disbanding of Luscious Jackson. It's titled "City Beach" and is being released under The Militia Group label.

Notable appearances

Luscious Jackson was the musical guest on numerous television shows in the 1990s, including Saturday Night Live and Viva Variety, and were part of 1994's Lollapalooza tour lineup. They were featured in Christmas ad campaign for The Gap (voted most popular ad of the campaign in TV Guide).

The band was also featured on the Nickelodeon TV series The Adventures of Pete and Pete in the episode titled "Dance Fever" as the band that plays at Little Pete's first junior high dance. They played the song "Here" at the dance/throughout the episode's credits.
