Introduction

  • After finishing with a goalless draw following extra time, Portugal defeat England 3-1 on penalties, and advance to the semi-finals.
  • With two goals from Luca Toni, Italy beat Ukraine 3-0 and advance to the semi-finals.
  • After finishing with a 1-1 draw following extra time, Germany defeat Argentina 4-2 on penalties and advance to the semi-finals. Klose scores Germany's only goal in the match and is still the competition's top scorer so far (5 goals).
  • France turn the tables against Spain 3-1 and complete the quarter finalists' list.
  • Brazil beat Ghana 3-0 and advance to the quarter finals; The defending champions set some historical records in this match; longest winning streak in World Cups with 11 wins; First team to score 200 goals in the World Cup and Ronaldo, who scores Brazil's first goal, surpasses Gerd Müller as the top scorer in the World Cup's history (15 goals).
  • After finishing with a goalless draw following extra time, Ukraine defeat Switzerland 3-0 on penalties, and advance to the quarter finals. For the first time in any World Cup final, a team is eliminated without conceding a goal in open play.
  • Italy score a penalty in the last minute to defeat Australia 1-0 and advance to the quarter finals.
  • Portugal defeat Netherlands 1-0 and advance to the quarter finals. For the first time in any World Cup final, four players are sent off.
  • England defeat Ecuador 1-0 and advance to the quarter finals. David Beckham scores the goal from a free-kick.
  • Argentina score a goal in extra time to defeat Mexico 2-1 and advance to the quarter finals.
  • Germany defeat Sweden 2-0 and advance to the quarter finals.
