Tarapoto is a thriving commercial city in northern Peru, situated in the San Martín Province of the San Martín Region. Although Moyobamba is the capital of the region, Tarapoto is its largest city, and is linked to the Upper Amazon and the historic city of Yurimaguas by a poorly maintained transandean road.

It has a population of about 100,000 inhabitants.

Tarapoto is often used by tourists as a "jumping off" point for excursions into the Amazon Rainforest, located to the east in what is known as the selva baja.

Tarapoto is served by the Cad. FAP Guillermo del Castillo Paredes Airport
