S.L. Bhyrappa (born July 26, 1934), is a Kannada writer and novelist widely regarded as one of the most famous writers and influential persons in the modern day Karnataka.
In the context of contemporary Kannada literature, novels have enjoyed a major role. Infact altogether twentieth century can be termed as "Era of Novels". Certain authors have lived through their writings in this pedigree. Apart from that some authors have renovated language, subject and pattern in Kannada literature out of their profession other than writing. S.L. Bhyrappa, even after being an academic, is one such popular novelist, acclaimed for reaching maximum number of readers, for who writing has been an instinct.
The subject an author chooses, way he treats the subject and the mindframe of the author in which the subject finds an end have been centres of various debates and arguments. Given these situations, Bhairappa's novels have been a major ingredient in the discussions among readers in a greater extent.
Early Life
Bhyrappa was born in a village called Santeshivara in Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan district. He was deprived of his mother at an early age and had to complete his primary education with lot of effort. He was highly influenced by Gandhi's principles and participated in the freedom struggle when he was just 13!
He completed his high school and college education in Mysore with gold medal in Master of Arts. He received his doctorate from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda for his dissertation essay "Satya mattu Soundarya"(Truth and the beauty) written in English. Serving as a lecturer in Hubli, later a Professor Sardar Patel University of Gujarat and NCERT Delhi, Bhairappa has produced significant novels. After his first novel Dharmashree, which was published in 1961, Bhyrappa has written twenty novels in a career spanning four decades. Most of his novels have generated lot of discussion and debate in symposiums and seminars. Bhyrappa's novels have been translated to most Indian languages, and English. Some of his novels such as Gruhabhanga, Vamshavruksha, Nele, Sakshi, NayiNeralu, Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, Datu, Dharmashree, Parva are very popular in Hindi and Marathi.
Vamshavruksha, Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane and Matadana have been made into movies and have bagged major awards. Vamshavruksha has received Kannada Sahitya Academy Award in 1966 and Daatu (The Crossing) has received both Kannada and Kendra Sahitya Academy awards in 1975. Parva has been the most discussed and applauded among all of his novels. It narrates the social structure, values and the mystery of mortality in the epoch of Mahabharata very effectively. Bhyrappa has manifested the lives of Draupadi, Kunti, Madri and Gandhari on the groundwork of copulation and mortality.
Apart from novels Bhyrappa has also written tomes pertaining to literarature and philosophy such as "Sahitya mattu prateeka, Kate mattu katavastu, Naneke bareyuttene?". Bhyrappa was elected as the president of Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in Kanakapura in 1999. Bhyrappa lives in Mysore.
