Individual Master File (IMF) is currently used by the IRS to store and process tax submissions and processes the IRS's transactions it is a running record of all of a persons individual tax events, Including refunds, penaltys issues, money owed to the irs etc. [1]
The IMF stores an individuals Name, TIN, Address, Income, Deductions, Credits, any payments received, taxes collected abbated and collected[2]
The IMF stores over 100 million Americans individual taxpayers data [3]
The IMF system began operation in the 1960s and is still used today.[4] and is generally considered to be due for modernisation[5]
There has also been multiple hardwere failures at key times[6], Including one which occurred on the 17 April 2018 during tax season
The IMF application is a system consisting of a series of batch runs, data records and files. The IMF system receives individual tax submissions in electronic format and processes them through a pre-posting phase, posts the transactions, analyzes the transactions and produces output in the form of Refund Data, Notice Data, Reports, and information feeds to other entities. After the implementation of CADE2 daily processing, IMF processes daily processing cycle for individual tax submission. IMF is a batch driven application that uses VSAM files.[7]
