The HTC Universal is a Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone, manufactured by High Tech Computer Corporation. It was the first 3G/UMTS-enabled Pocket PC phone, sold by many different vendors under the names of O2 xda Exec, Orange M5000, Dopod 900, Qtek 9000, T-Mobile MDA Pro, I-mate JasJar, Vodafone v1640, Vodafone VPA IV, E-Plus PDA IV etc. Despite all the different model names and housing appearance, they all have identical hardware specifications.
The main feature of this device is its 180 degrees swivel screen, allowing a quick swap between portrait mode and landscape mode (the GUI automatically changes accordingly) giving a laptop style form factor.
Although this device seems to do everything on paper, there are several problems apparent to users after a short time. It isn't clear whether these are inherited from the operating system or if HTC made an almost-perfect device. Some of the problems can be overcome, but a quick look round the XDA-Developers site linked below should help you decide if this is the right PocketPC for you.
SIM Lock
Most of the models are shipped SIM-locked, notably the O2 XDA Exec version comes without this limitation. Previously it had been impossible to unlock the Universal by oneself, but now a solution has been developed by a man known as "Buzz" and his team. The solution can be found here
This unlock tool is free of charge to anyone who registers on buzzdev.net (also free), although it took a large collaborative effort and many months of work to develop, so buzzdev.net encourages donations to aid further work on HTC devices for the benefit of the community.

Some features that can be enabled on the Universal
With Registry edits (which should only be done by people who are confident with registry editing) you can add substantial functionality.
- Wireless G (802.11g) connectivity
- SD card reader (USB mass storage device)
- Full VGA (640x480) display at all times
How to add WiFi G to your Universal
Although the Universal is shipped as 802.11b-compatible only, a registry tweak can make the Universal compatible with 802.11g-only access points, but the speed would still be the same as 802.11b (11 Mbit/s).
WARNING: EDITING THE REGISTRY MAY DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE; DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! BACKING UP THE REGISTRY BEFORE EDITING IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Change and add the following registry decimal values using a registry editing tool like the PHM Registry Editor:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMask=1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8
Then soft-reset your device, preferably using a software reset, but if you don't have a program to do this you should wait three to five minutes before poking the reset hole at the back of the unit.
