Hello Carptrash: Thank you for your contributions to the U.S. Merchant Marine page. You may know that the accuracy of the caption for your photo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Merchantmarines2.jpg is in question. I have supplied a link on the discussion page that points to evidence that some WW II merchant mariners did receive gunnery training, although it appears that such training would have been the exception rather than the rule. Still, a wiki editor's tag questioning the accuracy of your caption remains.

Would you be willing to re-cast the caption? The photo description could be re-phrased so it refers to a gunnery position on a merchant ship, thus sidestepping the issue of whether the gunners are merchant mariners? Stars in the northern hemisphere

The crux of the matter is, I have never noticed seeing that constellation. Visiting the northern hemisphere in recent times, I failed to see stars pretty much at all, it was summer and the sun is there for so long and then the haze ... I once camped in the mountains of Washington state, and there were many stars, but I was not gazing at them and figuring out constellations. So really it is about reading of foreign countries and past times ... I do say it was not the best chosen username :-) People seemed to have trouble with even saying it though. Thank you for your photo, I enjoyed it very much. I have tried to take pictures of stars with my digital camera and failed miserably. Did you use an ordinary digital camera? Hi thanks for that info - I too have an Olympus camera (C740UZ) but had not tried the moon and stars symbol - I really found the paper manual not useful and the manual on the CD of course not that accessible. The thing I like best about this camera is the 10 times zoom - I couldn't imagine not having that capability. Tonight, should it be clear, I will be out trying out the moon and stars. Musical Controversy / Potential Edit War -- Help?

Hello, Carptrash. I hope you remember me from Hal Blaine and the Memphis Jug Band. I am looking for some help with concensus on a musical issue and am inviting you to participate. Rather than prejudice your thinking, i will simply say that it involves a song by David Allan Coe called Nigger Fucker. In order to understand the flow of events, i suggest that you read the history of the page, and read through the revisions in date order (there are not an overhwleming number), then go to the talk page. Basically, there is a conflict between those who feel it is valuable to note what the song is about and those who wiish to "clean it up" to the point that there is no mention of the controversy between satire versus racism. Things became very heated when Shel Silverstein's name was dragged into it (why? Go figure...) and there is a user who is bsically reverting the article to a stub every few hours. I have never been in this sort of a conflict before, and i want to do what is right. I am not looking for people on "my side," just for people who have experience editing music pages who can bring some calmth to the situation. Esther Hicks dispute

Hi, I'm embroiled in a dispute with MaxMangel about edits he wants to include in the Esther Hicks article. He wants to include a statement about the lack of proof on Esther's website for her teachings, but so far his proposed edits seem to me to be uncited edits that are POV and don't meet WP:NOR, WP:V and WP:NPOV.

Here is the first edit by Max that I removed because it was clearly an opinion not backed up by a reliable source. Now his current proposed statement is "A thorough examining of her website reveals no attempt to evidence her teachings.", which strikes me as just plain wrong since it is such a broad statement, not to mention skirting closely to violating Wikipedia policy.

I'm afraid I may have gotten caught up in the opinion of an editor on the Village Pump and may have created my own statement that violates NOR, RS and NPOV.

I just wanted to get another opinion or two. Perhaps Max's comment is fine and I'm just not seeing it for some reason. I saw your earlier involvement in a discussion with him around "proven or unproven" and thought you could provide some valuable insight.

Washington, D.C. statuary

Thanks for updating the information on my images. It's something I've been meaning to work on, but there just always seems to be so many other things to do. My personal pet project will be to gather as much information and take as many pictures as possible of the public statuary here in the District. Hopefully there will be plenty more for you to get involved with. Also the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of American Art just opened up down the street from me, so I may start adding some pictures from there. Let me know if there is anything you would like pictures of here in Washington, I'm always looking for excuses to enjoy the arts here in Washington, and to take pictures. Martinez revisited

Thanks for your additions to the Martinez page. The gravestone photo was a pleasant surprise. I am going to be out there next week, and plan to hit the Martinez Hacienda, as I never went there in the 22 years I lived in New Mexico, and to see what sorts of books I can get on Martinez while I'm there. I'd like to get that article to "Good Article" status someday. I'm not real good

The article was deleted as it appeared (and continues to appear) to be an article about a real person which does not assert the notability or importance of the subject. WP:BIO has guidelines about when an individual is considered notable enough for inclusion, WP:CSD has information on when articles can be deleted without discussion, and WP:DRV is the normal place to go if wish to dispute a deletion. (Asking the admin who deleted it is also valid.)

If you wish the article to continue to be included on Wikipedia, a good way to do so would be to detail, in the article, how the subject meets WP:BIO guidelines, and cite your sources, which should be reliable. This guideline is not Wikipedia policy (and indeed the whole concept of notability is contentious) and Many Wikipedians oppose the use of this guideline. Then I discover The fact that an article doesn't meet guidelines on this page, does not necessarily mean it qualifies for speedy deletion.

Firstly, please be aware that just because a page is marked as a guideline does not mean that it can be unilaterally ignored, and most guidelines have broad consensus.

Secondly, there is a difference between an article that does not meet WP:BIO and an article that can be speedily deleted. Please keep in mind that thousands of articles are created each day on Wikipedia, and since Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information, it is not possible to include biographical articles on all of the billions of people who live or have ever lived on Earth. As a result, articles that have no assertion of notability (as in, do not make any case whatsoever for inclusion) are liable to be deleted on sight. We do not mean to undo your efforts (and in any case, archives of all deleted material are preserved and can be restored by admins), but please understand that without this speedy deletion policy Wikipedia would be hopelessly bogged down in articles about random teenagers who get bored in class.

Experts in niches are especially needed on wikipedia. Due to the rather aggressive nature of people who want to make articles on their girlfriends and garage bands, the new page patrol is also somewhat aggressive in marking inappropriate content (or that which appears so) for deletion. To avoid this in the future, you can work on articles in your User space, and then copy it to the main article space when it is ready. Regarding importance--the specific issue of the day--articles that do not assert the importance of their subject are candidates for speedy deletion, while articles that do assert importance, however imperfectly, need to be discussed at AfD. It would help if the article said something like "he was one of the leading artists in the Foo school of postmodernism" rather than "he carved a mural for a block of flats" (which is what it looks like it says now). (where was the Temptation carved for anyway) In other words, I think the article needs a little better focus. And, if you had taken this to deletion review (assuming no admin had turned over the deletion) it would have been an easy call to restore for more work.

Regarding poetry, I wanted to point out that you can include some very small bits of poetry under the Fair Use doctrine but using larger exerpts or whole works would be a violation of copyright law. Re. Barrett, I advise you to keep working on it while the AfD is in progress. If you can enlarge it substantially, you can state as such in the middle of the AfD. Key points are 1) to state his achievements e.g. list of sculptures, list of shows, any awards 2) use any comments made about him by notable people or the media 3) back it up with references. Simplest way to reference is by putting square brackets either end of a URL, and then attaching that to the end of the relevant sentence. Proper footnotes are even better. Some useful guides here. Nope. It was actually your comments on Talk:Neoshamanism. I tried to improve that page a bit today. I might go back later. I'm sorta interested in that stuff, but not really active in it or anything. I did write an article (more of a stub really) on one of Hank Wesselman's books (The Journey to the Sacred Garden) and have edited his page a bit. He taught my "Magic, Witchcraft and Religion" anthropology class last semester. It was very interesting, and I did try to do some drumming visions a couple times, but it didn't work too well. I'm thinking of trying some other time, but it's been a while since my last attempt. Not sure how I feel about all that stuff really, but I thought it would be nice to explore a bit. The article does specifically mention the magazine, which leads to fair use justification. There would be a stronger case if you were to add a little more about Life's use of it, and why this is important, for example. The point is that the article text must not just be about the subject of the photo, but about the magazine specifically. If you do upload it, make sure you uses the right fair use tag. John Marshall vandalism

Thanks for your note, but anyone can and should fix petty vandalism; it comes with the job description of being an editor here. The ones I admire are the users who make recent changes patrol part of their job description and pore over as many edits as they can, just for that. I'm glad to know someone else is keeping an eye on John Marshall; I have all Supreme Court Justices on my watchlist for a project I'm working on, but Marshall is a favorite. I too double-check anon contributions to my watchlisted articles, but I wouldn't support a move to registered-user-only editing, because I know that if I hadn't had a few days to experiment as an IP contributor, I almost certainly wouldn't have signed up for an account. It's a familiar story: casual reader sees something missing or wrong in an article, remembers that "anyone can edit," edits, likes the feeling of having added a nugget of content, gets hooked. But you could have reverted the damage yourself, you know. Check out WP:REVERT to see the instructions. You just have to go backwards through the page history until you find the version of the article that hasn't been mucked with. (Usually it's only one or two edits back, but sometimes it takes longer.) Then you click on the date and time for that entry and then click "edit this page". A red box comes up saying that you're editing an outdated version; ignore that and type in "revert vandalism" or something similar for your edit summary, and save the page. Presto! Hi. Sorry for the late reply - I haven't had a chance to edit much lately. I may be mistaken, but as far as I know, source information for images goes directly on the image pages, not in the articles where they're used. Wikipedia:Citing sources doesn't even mention images. Pictures can be removed from articles (leaving unused references), or added to other articles (where the references would not follow). Adding the information directly to the image pages avoids both problems. Hope my logic makes sense. - EurekaLott 04:50, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sullivan's banks are fascinating, aren't they? I don't know if they all deserve articles, but the ones on the National Register certainly could have articles written about them. Perhaps it would be best to start with one article that covers all of the banks. Individual articles could be split off later once they're long enough. For the Sullivan article, unsued items listed in the references section could be removed, or they could be moved to a "Further reading" section, as specified in the guide to layout. - EurekaLott 06:23, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whether you start individual articles or one overview article depends on how much you intend to write, I suppose. If you don't have enough material to make them longer than stubs, then perhaps the single article would be best. Or, you could create articles for some of them and summarize them all in the overview.
