The KMPlayer (not to be confused with KMPlayer) is a video and audio player which can play a large amount of formats such as VCD, DVD, AVI, MPEG-1/2/4, WMV, RealMedia, and QuickTime among others. It handles subtitles and allows you to capture screenshots.

The player provides both internal and external filters with a fully controlled environment in terms of connections to other splitters, decoders, audio/video transform filters and renderers without grappling with the DirectShow merit system. Interestingly, it is said that internal filters are not registered to user's system to keep it from being messed up with system filters.

It is possible to set audio and video effects, slow down or increase playback speed, select parts of a video as favorites, and many more. The KMPlayer is completely customizable thanks to a wide selection of skins and color schemes, and the configuration options are extensive.

The "K" of KMP simply indicates the initial character of the developer's family name (Kang). The full name of KMPlayer is K-Multimedia Player.

The KMPlayer includes almost all the essential decoders required for media playback as follows. Furthermore, to get beyond the limitation of internal decoders, the external ones can be specified, so that KMP works optimally by the users' own customization. Even though the KMP is based upon directshow, it supports Winamp, Realmedia and Quicktime by the internal logic. Thus, it is possible to specify where to connect the media in preferences.

Criticisms

  • Circling around, there are rumours that The KMPlayer uses GPL codes in the core part of the program, although The KMPlayer neither is open source, under GPL or has any notice about the included code in any form of EULA or such. This has found to be incorrect.
  • The KMPlayer isn't widely spread, although there are many full translations included and a good support forum.
