Ever since the British left India in 1947, many streets, places and buildings throughout India were assigned new "Indian names". Old names, however, continue to be popular.

There are two reasons behind renaming landmarks:

  • to remove an imperial name and give a local name
  • to change pronunciation and spelling

  • Madras to Tamil Nadu (change effective from January 14, 1969)
  • Mysore to Karnataka (change effective from November 1, 1973)
  • Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands to Lakshadweep (change effective from November 1, 1973)
  • Pondicherry to Puducherry (change effective October 1, 2006)
  • West Bengal to Bangla (not yet effective)
  • Assam to Asom (not yet effective)
