Minority

In sociology, minority is a small group of people with different nationality, religion, culture or lifestyle than the mainstream in the society.

Often the term focuses on lower social status rather than small numerical scale. For instance, while numerically women are not few, they are mostly considered minority given their inferior social rights compared with men. The definition frequently associated with a small group is rather misnomer.

Majority, in turn, is opposed to minority.
