Squawk Box, which debuted on CNBC in 1995, can refer to a number of television programmes broadcast by the CNBC group of television channels which air at breakfast time on their station of origin. Most specifically, it refers to the original US program on which the others are based.

The title originates from the term for the use of an intercom in investment banks and stock brokerages to communicate stock deals or sales priorities.

Squawk Box

The original Squawk Box is a morning TV program on CNBC in which the hosts and a guest analyze the investment market. It is named after the squawk box, an intercom system loudspeaker used on trading desks. The programme airs from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. Eastern Time. It is also relayed live on CNBC Europe from noon until 3 p.m. Western European Time (except on the week between the last Sunday of March and the first Sunday of April; sometimes it is pre-empted for local programming, in cases of major events such as European Central Bank interest rate announcements) and is also relayed live on CNBC Asia.

The program was originally presented by New Jersey lawyer Mark Haines. But Haines was eventually replaced in that capacity in December 2005 by Rebecca Quick.

Other regular contributors included Joe Kernen, David Faber, Steve Liesman, and others. Maria Bartiromo appeared on the show on occasion. The programme currently covers the opening bells of the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ Stock Market at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Other regular segments included:

The program has its own blog on MSN Spaces, called SquawkBlog, where the program hosts post their comments. The show also has a daily poll on CNBC's website, called "SquawkBack."

The US program underwent a significant revamp on December 19, 2005, with its expansion to a four hour slot (6 a.m.-10 a.m. ET). Joe Kernen, Rebecca Quick, and Carl Quintanilla are the new hosts, with Mark Haines, Erin Burnett (both of whom anchor from the New York Stock Exchange), and David Faber presenting the Squawk on the Street segment from 9 a.m.-10 a.m.. Charlie Gasparino, formerly of Newsweek magazine, is CNBC's on-air editor, joining Kernen, Quick, and Quintanilla during the 6 a.m.-9 a.m. show. Other contributors include Melissa Lee, Bianna Golodryga (who presents the "On the Box" segments), Michelle Caruso-Cabrera (who presents the "World Market Update" segment), Melissa Francis (NYMEX), Rick Santelli (Chicago), Steve Liesman, Liz Claman, and CNBC senior analyst Ron Insana. When the US Squawk Box program moved to 6am ET on December 19, 2005, there was no guest host. Now, there is occasionally a guest host, who now appears in the second and third hour of the show, similar to that of its Asia and Europe counterparts.

There has been an avalanche of negative complaints against these new changes, most notably the removal of Mark Haines from the Squawk Box team. On the SquawkBox Blog, over 200+ complaints have been entered into the site, along with numerous messages posted on the CNBC Squawk Box message board, plus over 500 complaints have been e-mailed directly to CNBC about the changes.

Squawk Box Europe

There also exists a programme entitled Squawk Box Europe on CNBC Europe, aired from 6:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. GMT each weekday. This is presented by Geoff Cutmore alongside contributors Louisa Bojesen, Guy Johnson and Stephen Sedgwick. In addition, live reports are provided by Genevieve Butler (Paris), Anna Martin (LSE), Roland Klaus (Frankfurt), Dan Scott (Zurich) and Claudia Pensotti (Milan). A guest host also appears on the programme each day (during the second and third hour, like its US and Asia counterparts). It covers the opening of the European markets at 8:00 a.m. GMT.

Prior to the adoption of the current on-air look in September 2004, the programme was known as CNBC Europe Squawk Box. Prior to May 2003, the programme had run for only two hours, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.. It gained an hour from Today's Business however.

Squawk Box Europe airs in the United States on CNBC World at the respective time, 1:00 a.m. - 4:00 a.m., ET.

Squawk Box Asia

CNBC Asia also airs a programme entitled Squawk Box Asia from 6:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. (Hong Kong/Singapore/Taiwan time). This programme is also aired on CNBC World in the United States at the respective time (5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) covers the opening of the Asian markets and is presented by Martin Soong. There is occasionally a guest host. Most recently, it seems that CNBC Asia prefers to have the guest hosts join in on the second and third hour of Asia Squawk Box, similar to that of its US and Europe counterparts. Regular contributors include Arnold Gay, Fauziah Ibrahim, Sri Jegarajah, Cheng Lei, Saijel Patel, Betty Liu (Hong Kong), and Kaori Enjoji (Tokyo).

As of October 30, 2006 (the same day the Asia network debuted a new graphics package similar to its US and European siblings, video:[1]), CNBC Asia began using the US programme's logo, replacing the previous logo, seen below, that was used from 2004-2006.
