Himesh Reshammiya (born July 23, 1975) is an Indian Bollywood film music composer and singer. The son of Veteran Gujarati music director Vipin Reshammiya . Himesh did his schooling at Hill Grange School in Peddar Road. Early in Himesh's career, he received critical acclaim for his musical scores, although the films associated with them were not popular at the box office. As of mid-2005, he has become a popular name in the industry. He became extremely popular after the phenomenal success of Aashiq Banaya Aapne. His first film was Bandhan (1998), in which he collaborated with Anand Raj Anand to produce the musical score. Although it was not the first film to which he contributed music, it was the first one on which he was listed as a contributing music director. Although, primarily a music director, he is now more popular for his vocals which have the distinctive high-pitched nasal twang.
Music director
Himesh Reshammiya was first noticed in Bollywood for his work in the film Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998). He became good friends with Salman Khan, a famous Bollywood actor who starred in the film, and composed songs for some subsequent film in which Salman starred. From this experience, Reshammiya was able to develop his own unique style of composition, based on pop music and catchy techno beats. He also places a particular emphasis on melodic hooks to his songs. His most popular albums can be said to be Tere Naam and Aashiq Banaya Aapne. With a series of popular film scores, he is considered one of the upcoming music composers in Indian cinema today. His music is associated with the youthful culture that has recently been pervasive in India, but he has also shown versatility, focusing on a more classical style for films such as Banaras: A Mystic Love Story and semi-classical like Tere Naam. As of 2006 he is the top composer of this year having more than 15 soundtracks under 6 months when composers usually compose 10-12 soundtracks in a year. It is also reported that his recent music composition Dil Diya Hai represented Himesh's tiredness as his music has not been quite top charting as it used to be. The media has advised Himesh to cut down work as he is working on 30-35 films (equivalent to half the films released in bollywood in 1 year). Aksar and Ahista Ahista are considered Himesh's best score this year after Tere Naam in 2003.
Music Review
Himesh Reshammiya is a talented composer. Apart from that, he is composed music in classical, semi-classical, fusion and heavy metal styles. Often he composes too many songs which suit only his voice. He also prefers only Sameer as his lyricist. Aashiq Banaya Aapne and Tere Naam are his best scores as of now.
Singer
Reshammiya, like many of his contemporary music composers, sings several of the songs that he composes. However, he has had unprecedented success in this regard. He won a Filmfare Award in 2005 for Best Male Playback Singer (for the title song of Aashiq Banaya Aapne), becoming the first music composer to do so. Reshammiya has also released a solo music album entitled Aap Kaa Surroor which became extremely popular. He has made it clear, however, that he still plans to put most of his effort in Hindi films.
Recently, music composers have released music videos for songs for films that have not been screened. Reshammiya has continued this trend with Zara Jhoom Jhoom from the film Tom, Dick, and Harry and Jhalak Dikhlaja from Aksar . A music video for an alternative title song for the film Humko Deewana Kar Gaye is also being screened on various music channels these days. Reshammiya and Tulsi Kumar are the singers, and the video is filmed on the movie's actors Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar.
Himesh started his career with a production house which aired quiet a few TV soaps on Doordarshan and Zee Tv. Lately it was Andaz which was a big hit. He was scared that unlike his father he may also have to choose to struggle to make a name in the industry. Hence he decided to produce TV serials. While he was in his teenage, after Maine Pyaar Kiya, he got friends with Salman Khan who promised to make a movie with him. That movie did not even complete, but the friendship stayed and Salman decided to give him an opportunity as a Music Director in Guneet Sohail's debutant direction, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya. The songs of the movie were super hit like, Oh Oh Jaane Jana, sung by Kamaal Khan. Its indeed to mention that his songs have the word "Odhani" in them.
Fashion style
Reshammiya has a unique fashion sense that makes him a recognizable face within the Indian film industry. He wears a baseball cap and is usually seen wearing a pair of jeans with a conspicuous belt buckle along with his trademark stubble. The way he holds the mic with the bottom facing upwards, and the black trench coat that he wears in concerts are also consistent elements of his style. He has grown a beard as opposed to his previous look when he was clean shaved .He also has one earring in his left ear. His friend Prashant Chadha is reputedly responsible for Himesh’s new look. Prashant has also directed all of Himesh’s music videos from his private album “Aap Kaa Surroor” as well as promotional videos for the movies “Aashiq Banaya Aapne”, “Aksar”, “Tom, Dick & Harry” and “Humko Deewana Kar Gaye”.
Criticism
In spite of his popularity, Himesh Reshammiya has been the target of growing criticism. Many suggest that his works oversaturate the market and, as a result, he is showing signs of being overworked. Many consider his chart-busters to be similar to the point of being indistinguishable. His staples of his nasal voice, violin, loud beats, and a main chorus consisting of a repetition of a short phrase carry from song to song. Furthermore, his voice, once cited as unique, has been the target of huge criticism as many find his voice to be too nasal. As if in response to the last charge, Himesh has tried cutting down on the nasality of his voice. This can be seen in his latest album, Aap Ki Khatir.
