A slaughterhouse, also called an abbatoir from the French word "abattre" (to strike down), is a facility where animals are killed and processed into meat products. An older term for a slaughterhouse is a "shambles"; this is the origin of the name of certain streets in some english towns (e.g. Worcester, York) which had formerly contained a slaughterhouse.
