ASAIO Journal
ASAIO Journal is a peer-reviewed medical journal published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and edited by Mark S. Slaughter, MD.[1][2][3][4][5] It is the official journal of ASAIO (American Society for Artificial Internal Organs). The journal features research and development of artificial organs.
Scope
ASAIO Journal publishes studies that describe research, development, and recent advances in the design of artificial organ devices, and findings from initial testing. The primary focus is on biomedical device innovations, and the journal contains basic science research, clinical translational research, original clinical research articles, state-of-the-art reviews, surgical techniques, as well as editorial material.
Much of the early work published in ASAIO Journal laid the foundation for renal dialysis and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), two forms of extracorporeal life support (ECLS). ASAIO Journal has expanded its focus on artificial organ research to include ventricular assist device for adults and children, artificial heart, artificial lung, tissue engineering, biomedical engineering, intensive care medicine, 3D printing technologies, and perfusion.
History
ASAIO Journal began in 1955 as a forum for publishing “transactions” from the annual ASAIO conference. Hence, the first iteration of the journal was titled Transactions of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs. A complete history of ASAIO and the landmark papers published in ASAIO Journal can be found in the 50th Anniversary Gold Book.[6]. All issues of the journal from 1955 to the present can be found on the journal website. ASAIO Journal also publishes the conference abstracts from the annual ASAIO meeting.[7]
