Ostankino Tower is a free-standing television and radio tower in Moscow, originally 540 meters in height, designed by Nikolai Nikitin. Its construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1967.

It burned in August 2000 with the loss of three lives and serious structural damage. It is scheduled to reopen in 2004 following massive reconstruction.

It is the tallest free-standing structure in the world and is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers. However, according to some information, in 2003 a new antenna was installed, making it at 577 meters once again the world's tallest free-standing structure, surpassing the CN Tower in Toronto.
