History -- Military history -- List of battles -- History of Japan -- History of Russia

The Battle of Tsushima was a sea battle on May 27, 1905.

The Japanese combined fleet and the Russian Baltic Fleet, sent over from Europe, fought off the coast of Japan. The Russians were deputed to break the blockade of Port Arthur, but the city was already fallen before the arrival of the ships and so they tried to reach Vladivostok.

Nearly the entire Baltic fleet was lost in the battle in the Tsushima Straights. Several reasons are probable causes for this dramatic defeat: the lead division's guns were brought into battle rather late, the gunnery of the Baltic fleet was relatively poor and the quality of the ammunition was possibly very poor.
