A housewife is a married woman whose prime occupation is to care for her children, husband and home. Contemporary synonyms include homemaker and at-home-mom. Many Christian groups feel that this is the appropriate and most fulfilling role for the adult woman, while some feminists disagree.

A range of educational and practical experiences can prepare a girl or young woman for a life as a housewife. In high school, they may for instance study home economics or Family and consumer science.
