Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (October 31, 1875December 15, 1950) was an Indian statesman and the commander in chief of the Indian National Congress next to Mohandas Gandhi. Due to his efforts, the Congress registered 100% victory in elections in 1937. Sardar Patel was the would-be Prime Minister of India, supported by most of Congress members. Only on persuasion from Gandhi, he stepped back from the Prime Ministerial Candidate election and left the path open for Jawaharlal Nehru.

Sardar was a title he earned as a mark of respect from the people of Gujarat. One of the greatest contributions of the Iron Man of India, as he is known, is in the consolidation of the Indian princely states into the country now known as India.

There is one university, Sardar Patel University, bearing the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
