Szczecin (German name Stettin),Pomerania is a city currently in north-western Poland, capital of Zachodniopomorskie region. City is located on both side of delta river, left (west) side is called Lewobrzeze and right (east) Prawobrzeze. Between them are a great area with many islands - there is industrial area with shipyards and sea-port infrastructure.

Szczecin is situated south of the Greater Bay into which the Oder river flows.

History of Szczecin

  • (earliest history must yet be confirmed)
  • 967-972 - probably taken over by Mieszko I
  • 1181 - All of Pomerania is in the Holy Roman Empire
  • 1237-1243 -Stettin gets Magdeburg laws
  • 1472 - Since then Imperial Elector Brandenburg is also ruler of Pomerania
  • 1630 - Sweden (as part of the empire) takes over Stettin
  • 26 April 1945 - city taken over by Soviet army, a part of Poland theresince. Battle of Szczecin was occupied by death of many soldiers, about 40000 Germans and unknown quantity of Russians.
