The Nyssa sylvatica is also known as black tupelo, black gum, and pepperidge. It is a woody plant and in Greek it means "nymph of the woods". The leaves are red-purple to begin with and eventually turn green. It is native to the western U.S. and southern Canada, especially Ontario.
