Hi, John, thanks for catching the alternate meaning of Or.
BTW, you may want to look at Wikipedia:Disambiguation to see how we format pages like this that deal with multiple unrelated meanings of a term, and how we edit links to make reading the encyclopædia smoother.
But don't worry about doing these things for Or itself now; I took care of it. — Toby 06:56 Oct 18, 2002 (UTC)
Hi John. That make sense. Ok. User:anthere
Hi John, thanks for your corrections concerning the Battle of Hastenbeck. Since English is not my mother tongue your help is very appreciated :-). One short note: the correct spelling of Hanover is with one 'n'. Being from Hanover this is very confusing because Germans write it "Hannover". mkrohn 22:12 Mar 25, 2003 (UTC)

Hi John, Thanks for your additions and comments. I'm new to this game but learning quickly. I felt that if I made the required changes to my personal page, I could delete the recommended deletions entry accordingly :-( ?
But the only way to learn is to watch others more skilled at this!

Hi John, maybe you could check out the new user George Washington. He seems to be Weezer who was Michael and spent ages vandalising sites. He moved weezer stuff to the GW user page. He also has put some text about the real George Washington on the user page, with add-ins about Washington's sex life (this time about his penis turning green). Michael spent some time and a lot of effort trying to add in references to oral sex to the main page. If it is Michael/Weezer, they both were banned (and indeed threatened with law under using the name of a real band and purporting to be them). The new George Washington needs to be kept a close eye on. If he so much as starts adding in yet more ficticious entries about bands, he should be immediately banned. The fact that he as assumed the name George Washington and added in more stuff about Washington and his sex life suggests it is Michael and he hasn't changed and intends to behave as before. Congrats, BTW, on the new status. STÓD/ÉÍRE 22:38 Apr 7, 2003 (UTC)
I guess I have a knack for subtle edits :). Just a quick question, do you delete newb tests right away (unless you know enough for a stub) or do you wait a while? That's what I do, but you've been cleaning up junk pages longer than I have so I'd thought I ask your method. -- Notheruser 23:12 Apr 8, 2003 (UTC)
I recreated platoon mode as a redirect. These articles were probably created because there are external links to these pages, so it makes sense to keep them as redirects. See also the history of the article future of the car. Martin
Yes, I took some spaces out from the beginning of paragraphs (at Laurent) - I've not heard of them causing problems here at the Wikipedia before, but apparently pre tags (which is what spaces at the beginning of a line are turned into I think) cause all manner of problems in various browsers. --Camembert

Hey, that's what I'm here for. I don't think I've seriously contributed to any articles for a couple weeks now, except for List of famous elephants, which is hardly something to brag about. Heh heh. if you look at the line above where Kingturtle writes about Black Widow he . . . em. . . expresses what he thinks of 'her' by where he links all of the words in the line about her to. Take a look. STÓD/ÉÍRE 06:11 Apr 15, 2003 (UTC)
If Wikipedia upholds the principle of neutral point of view, why do you censor the internationalist perspective on human rights violations in Iraq, specifically, by the American-led coalition? Fact is, your "neutral" dictionary is a repository of Western bias and complicity in crimes against humanity, and as I stated in another forum (talk:Human rights violations in Iraq), I'm compiling evidence from the vast stores Wikipedia provides.

- You do not understand what I'm saying. As I continue' to say, I have no objection to your putting the information about bombings by Israel in Lebanon in some other' article, but it doesn't belong in the Hezbollah article. -- Zoe
Thanks for fixing that link in Fort Oswego. Can you tell me why I can't get the Oswego, N Y link right? There is an article but it does not match the link. I've tried two different so far, and it is too late to try again tonight. Thanks again, 'till tomorrow. Lou I 07:26 Apr 15, 2003 (UTC)
Thanks for the picture code you put into Royal Jordanian for me. It nicely fulfils my main criterion, which was that the picture and caption appearance should be completely unchanged. What I didn't gather from the very few replies to my Pump posting is whether I should change the coding from my Table coding to your CSS coding, on all my future picture work. It would be annoying to standardise on your code then find that some Wiki Admin could see an incompatibilty with certain browsers or whatever. Should I change over? I would love to have your further comments. Best Wishes, Adrian.

Poring over my big 'pedia of world aircraft, I see EC-135C (started as KC-135B), EC-135H, EC-135L as "dual relay station and command post", and EC-135Y all designated as some sort of command post. Given the way they're fiddled with, some of these had to be nearly one-offs, and for some I think it will be a very long time before all the details come out... Stan 06:53 Apr 17, 2003 (UTC)

Just to beat all you pedants to the punch, yeah, I know, the Web isn't really 10 years old today, it's just the ten year anniversary of the 1.0 release of the first graphical browser. I meant that in sort of a tongue-in-cheek sort of way; in hindsight, I probably should have suffixed it with ";)" rather than ":)". -- John Owens 18:06 Apr 22, 2003 (UTC)

Hi John, I did a major rewrite of Appeasement. Perhaps you could have a look over it to see what you think. BTW, I just saw on your main page that there is a latin wiki. I burst out laughing. If only I had studied harder at latin in school. I once got 89% in a latin exam and the teacher put on a sour puss and asked "so what went wrong? You'll have to do better to get your exams." And to one classmate who got 94% she scoulded "Paul, it isn't like you to do so badly. What happened?" Needlesstosay, we all dropped out of latin after that!!! ÉÍREman 01:31 Apr 24, 2003 (UTC)
I did state that a lot of the content is salvageable, recommending that it be placed in other articles. I have not looked over your contributions. Sorry for not making the distinction. 172
About 213.122.1.50: it's 1 AM here and I'm getting tired and irritable. Please forgive me if I block him unilaterally or start using bad words on his/her talk page. Better idea: I'll just go to bed and leave it to you. Keep an eye on Bash Street Kids -- I did a revert there, s/he might want to start an edit war. On the other subject: I'm not sure if we have any evil genius positions available right now, but I'll see what I can do. The fact that you're American doesn't count in your favour. Do you work for the CIA? -- Tim Starling 15:01 Apr 24, 2003 (UTC)

Sorry if I've leapt in too quickly with Joule's law. You may want to embellish it with references to Joule, and to give the relationship with other concepts, such as the mechanical equivalent of heat etc.
David Martland 20:09 Apr 25, 2003 (UTC)
Thanks for the improvements to Joule's law. As edited it was still misleading, due to the way that math's gets typeset. I've altered it, and arguably improved it (so at least the constant looks like 1 - ONE), but the size of the font used for the units is still too big.
David Martland 09:23 Apr 26, 2003 (UTC)
Thanks. Those weren't me, but thanks for the heads up. Danny
Hi John, Thanks for copyediting the page on Toward the Light - although I'm not really content with the result. I started re-editing, but thought I'd better write to you. Your own remarks to the editing went something like 'need for better words than 'claim', (etc).' Well I agree - the page now signals a sceptical approach to the subject, rather than a more objective (descriptive). In my opinion it's become too biased. A better approach could be to use phrases such as 'according to' perhaps. Do you have any suggestions? Regardes Morten Barfoed
Thanks, John. The keyboard thing really puzzled me, but the 'change' only ever seemed to happen when on wiki, indeed on a certain number of pages on wiki (the talk page of Wilhelm II of Germany for example. I'd be in it, hit a number one and get a + sign. I haven't had it happen off wiki, but maybe the fact that I am almost always wiki means it is just a co-incidence. BTW doing a Rumsfeld is described as having all the subtlety of a brick, doing what you want irrespective of anyone else's views and stubbornly getting your own way. PS: I'm typing to the sound of iTunes playing part of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite - as the music goes on it gets faster and more rhythmic. And I've just noticed that I was typing to the same rhythm, typing faster and faster as the music sped up. I must remember not to play Grieg while typing - it is too hard on the fingers. (Puccini is playing now and I am typing much m u c h s l o w e r ! ! !) ÉÍREman 14:25 Apr 29, 2003 (UTC)
- Now I'm going to have to find out if 'la' is really official, or just what they use because it makes sense.
'la' is indeed the official two-letter abbreviation for Latin. [3]
Then it was worth writing it if it was useful to you John. :-))) ant
Thanks for the thanks :). -- Notheruser 22:30 May 1, 2003 (UTC)
Jeez. German I/idealism. What a question to ask as dawn breaks here. The answer is I dunno. It probably depends on the context, and not knowing much about the topic, I cannot answer. But in general, if it is a specific name of a specific movement, then it would be treated as a proper noun and given caps. If used generally and generically, it wouldn't. I am afraid I am too tired to think right now. ( I realised that when I sort of 'missed' a couple of songs of a CD that was playing. I found myself saying 'that's not number 3 on the running order and realising it had played 3 and 4 and was onto 5! I must have nodded off!!! ÉÍREman 04:57 May 2, 2003 (UTC)
Indeed, John. The power of convergent evolution is asonishing sometimes, and birds are a wonderful illustration of it. Consider the "robin redbreast". There is one in the US, one in Europe & UK, and one in Australia. All three are pudgy little things that sit on any convenient object (such as a fence post, or the handle of your spade if you are gardening), and keep a sharp eye out for tasty grubs. Here they are: American Robin, European Robin, and the Scarlet Robin of south-east Australia. Obviously, they are close relatives -- not!
The first two are both Turdidae species, but from different genera, and the Scarlet Robin is part of the Petroicidae - about as far away from the Turdidae as you can get and still be a passerine. Despite having the same shape, habits, diet, and even colour, it is more closely related to the jays and ravens than it is to the thrushes & chats. This sort of puzzle is one of the reasns why I love learning about birds so much.
Now, to business: I know very little about the American species. I'm afraid I wouldn't recognise any California Condor (never mind a juvenile), bar figuring out that it isn't any of the 25-odd raptors we have here in Australia. I'm just doing minor copyedit stuff on those pages at the moment. But I imagine that you are correct - it's a matter of using whichever pictures are available. Any time you want to add some of your expertise to the bird entries (or better yet, slip on over and sign up with Wikipedia:WikiProject Birds, you'll be more than welcome. With over 9000 species, there is no shortage of work to be done! Tannin
OK, now I'm puzzled. What's with the "no slash"? I thought you were supposed to always put slashes after external links? Some very rude contributor, no doubt the banned DK, used to go round adding them and saying "/ after the URL, damnit!". Usually I forget to add the slash, today I happened to remember. Tannin
- Oh. Of course. I knew that - hell, I've made a living by knowing something about computers for more years than I care to admit to. Some serious brain-fade here: I was asking myself "what is the 'pedia rule for this?" and not knowing the answer when I should have asked myself "what is the Unix file-naming convention?" Now I feel stupid. :( Tannin
- DK. Banned ex-user. (Or DW, or something. I always forget.) As in "Black Widow", and, of course, our dear friend "Olga". But maybe it was someone else. --T
Thanks for sorting "List of Furniture Designers" I didn't intend to ever get into lists, couldn't see the point of them but they are a way to introduce a number of related articles..Incidentally, I got there from the Woodworking page, its a fairly pathetic effort at the moment. Do you have any suggestions for a neat wiki-way to make it more usefulPing 08:19 May 2, 2003 (UTC)
Another occasion to head off possible queries before they're even asked: if you're here wondering why an edit diff show lots of paragraphs modified, but no visible difference between them, I usually take it upon myself to eliminate double spaces anywhere they crop up. HTML just ignores them anyway. Generally elsewhere, I'm the kind to make sure I put double spaces between every sentence, but here they're useless and a waste of space (no pun intended), unless you're going to go to the trouble of sticking a " " in as well.
Similarly, I might be removing extra newlines; again, there's very rarely any purpose to having more than one in a row. And if a page has one at the end of every 80 characters or less, I'll definitely undo that; I can tolerate one after every sentence or something like that, though. -- John Owens

Hi John Thank you for your help about Isfahan. It certainly looks better now. I realy like this encyclopedia; it is one of the first places I look up things! Carry on with the good work. Good Luck
John here is me again. What do you think about writing the alternative spell of Isfahan(which is Esfahan) in the 'Isfahan' Page as well as in the 'City of Isfahan'page which I have already done? If you think it is suitable pleaes do it yourself because I have to goto bed!! The reason is that both the city and the province have been spelt "Esfahan" and I think doing this would avoid confusion.
Note: Please don't' take offense when I swear at you...it's a nasty habit that I'm trying to get rid of.
The picture was all in good fun, a satire against Fred's charges of "historical revisionism." Rather than reacting with anger or disdain, a little light satire can be a humorous way of getting a point across. 172
Thanks for fixing the alignment of my little parody. 172
Hi John, could you please take a look at Communist state. The page is about about a political science constitutional definition, which was created because some people (specifically Fred Bauder) insisted he didn't know what the political science term 'Communist state' meant (and spent time going to pages where it was used and removing it to replace it with 'authoritarian' which is not the term used by political scientists in the way he insists on using it). Fred Bauder has spent over twenty edits trying to add in stuff that is not linked to a political science definition but which is a general talk about the ills of communISM, which is no more relevant on that page that if one would put a discussion on a detailed discussion on a page on federal state that was just defining what a federal state is, not a discussion on America. (Or turning a page on the constitutional term Constitutional monarchy into a discussion of Prince Charles' sex life. Those sortd of stuff would belong on a different page perhaps linked to the main page).
I created a separate link for him to work on his stuff (which even he admitted is 'unbalanced'). RK has criticsed him. Tarquin had critised him. Tannin got involved in reverting Fred's constant POVing the article (which he has tried on other pages such as China). Now The Cunctator has started where Fred has left off, adding in Fred's stuff back into the main page by trying to merge both, bringing everything back to square one. Could you please take a look at the page. I am exhausted trying to tell Fred and The Cunctator that they are putting the stuff on the wrong page even if it was well written and not blatently POV. They won't pay any attention to what I say even though I am a political scientist and historian who specialises in defining constitutional structures, won't listen to 172 (who may hold some quite left wing views but is an acknowledged expert on the area), won't heed Tannin, Tarquin, RK or anyone else (most the people originally involved have just given up on the page in frustration at Fred's actions). And this isn't the first time Fred as POVed articles on the topic with Ronald Reagan-style 'evil empire' stuff (he produced similar edit wars elsewhere, while accusing everyone else of being like people who deny the Holocaust! I respect your opinion and would welcome your contribution. ÉÍREman 22:21 May 9, 2003 (UTC)

Hi John. Wolfram can be very useful at times, I discovered it about six or seven years ago and thought it was great. As luck would have it, soon after that it was removed from the internet because (I think) someone was trying to sue them for breach of copyright over something. Thankfully it reappeared, though I have no idea what happened in the court case, if it ever went that far. They seem to be sticking more and more mathematica code into their articles though which annoys me slightly. I guess it's fair enough if Wolfram's paying for it all but I think it's all the more reason for us to make Wikipedia's maths section even better. Regards -- Ams80 21:52 16 May 2003 (UTC)
