Martin Aitchison was one of the main Ladybird Book artists in the hey-day of Ladybird Books - between the 1960s and 1980s. He illustrated a large number of the well-known (and still in print) Peter and Jane books which were used to teach so many British children to read. The consistency, naturalistic style and attention to detail of the artist made him a favourite with the prolific British publisher and over a period of a quarter of a century, he illustrated at least 100 different titles.

Before working for Ladybird, Martin Aitchison illustrated the cartoon strip 'Luck of the Legion' for the popular [Eagle comic], where he displays his talents in a more exhuberant and creative medium, working mainly from imagination.

Martin Aitchison was not the only artist to make the switch from The Eagle, to Ladybird; Frank Hampson and Frank Humphris also followed the same path.
