Hull speed

The hull speed is the maximum speed that a displacement hull can achieve. The hull speed in knots is approximately equal to the square root of the waterline length in feet, times 1.34.

This relationship is based upon the physics equations of wave motion, where the hull speed is equal to the square root of the acceleration of gravity (9.80665 m/s^2) times the waterline length divided by two*pi.
