The Dark Side is a distinctly negative ethical paradigm.

The phrase was emphasized in George Lucas's Star Wars trilogy. It is the view espoused by Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, et al.

The term itself is quite difficult to define. In the movie, it refers to actions one might take that are the result of fear, uncertainty, doubt, or other negative feelings. These are "inevitably" self destructive. George Lucas compared the Light and Dark sides to the process of symbiosis and cancer. A follower of the Light side tries to live in harmony with those around him. Mutual trust, respect, and the ability to form alliances is what gave the Jedi a distinct advantage over the Sith. A follower of the Dark side is only out for themselves. The pupil-master relationship is perverted as it is expected that the student or master must eventually kill the other. Every time a Dark side force rises, it always ends up collapsing from the inside out. From a spectator's point of view, one would think that the Force literally has two sides, Light and Dark. This, however, is not the case. In the Star Wars universe the Force picks no side, but it instead strives for balance. When a Jedi speaks of the Dark Side they refer to the darkness within every living sentient. It is the hate, vengence, and malice in all living things. When one falls to these desires then they bring about havoc to reach their ends. When a force sensitive uses their power for such acts, it tips the Force scales off balance. This is why the Jedi Code restrains one from such acts, and the Sith strive (then fall) in it. The Jedi seek the balance of the Force (Light Side), and the Sith seek its chaos (Dark Side).
