    Ask intelligent questions

When asking a question about editing Wikipedia at the Teahouse or Help desk, please include all the facts needed to answer your question - especially the page title you're enquiring about. Most respondents will assume you are editing in 'desktop' view, and are using Source Editor, not Visual Editor (VE). So remember to say if you're working on a mobile or using VE.

Always give context to any question. At the Reference desk, for example, don't ask "who was president in 1900?" without mentioning the country you're interested in! This prevents volunteers helpers having to ask follow-up questions before providing answers. Friendly reminder: the Teahouse (for new editors) and Help desk are for questions on how to use or edit Wikipedia; the Reference desk is for questions about anything else (real world questions).

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Pbsouthwood,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello Pbsouthwood,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders

  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.

Question from Treecerman (21:09, 28 April 2023)

It's my first time. I wish to add some major credits missing from Mike Royer's page. How may I do that? --Treecerman (talk) 21:09, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Treecerman, Do you have a reliable source for the information you wish to add? Also, what exactly do you mean by "credits". Thirdly it is not Mike Royer's page, it is the page about Mike Royer. This may seem like splitting hairs, but it is important for editors to be aware that no page is owned by anyone. When discussing a page it is desirable to link to it so that it is clear exactly which page we are discussing, as we have many pages with similar names, and there may be several people called Mike Royer. Don't worry too much though, it takes a while to learn all these things.
To add content to a page, you first work out where on the page it should go. You then open that section to edit and type in the content so that it fits the flow of the existing content, then you check the preview, make any corrections that may be necessary, and publish the page. It is good practice to leave an edit summary briefly describing your edit if it is not obvious. You will also have to provide a reference for the information you add so that anyone who wants to check the facts can do so. This is particularly important on biographies of living people. There are several ways this can be done, all of them explained in detail on our help pages. I suggest you work through WP:The Wikipedia Adventure which addresses some of these things. There are tutorials on how to do these things, or you can just have a go. Anything you do can be fixed if it goes wrong, but it is obviously better not to make a mess for someone else to clean up. An alternative is to leave a message on the article's talk page with the information, and leave it to someone else to add to the article if/when they get around to it, but if you intend to edit frequently you need to learn how to do it yourself. If this is not what you need to know, ask again, and try to be as specific as you can. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 08:41, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I will try to look over the information you supplied.
I have all the books which from Marvel in the 1970's which Jack Kirby drew and Mike Royer inked.
Hopefully, I can figure it out. This is a huge oversight for Wikipedia not to include this.
Yes, I know exactly where it should appear. Under the DC section of his work under the heading The 1970's. 23.155.160.1 (talk) 22:07, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You will find that Wikipedia has plenty of what you describe as "huge oversights", because not everyone has access to all the sources. This is basically how a collaborative encyclopedia works, we each do what we can, and what we can't, we leave to someone else. It is also why we never consider an article to be complete. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:51, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cataract surgery

Thanks, Baffle gab1978, I will monitor your progress. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk):
No worries; there's a lot to do here. You seems to be an expert in the subject, so please pull me up if I mess up anything important. There seems to be lot of unnecessary details here; I'm currently converting lists to inline prose but I'm probably going to leave the list in "Complications" --> "After surgery". Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:41, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch that, though I've left a small list at the end of the section. From "History" --> "Couching", I've moved a lengthy passage translated from Sanskrit to Couching (ophthalmology) as a footnote; I think it's more appropriate there. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:25, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Baffle gab1978, I am no expert, I just have enough education and experience to be able to do the research in a field that is well covered by good sources. I rewrote the article after I had the procedure myself (phaco). I have been impressed by your ability to clean up without information loss or distortion, but I guess you are basically doing what I did with a different focus, and without the constraint of avoiding close paraphrasing. I was considering the same split and merge for the translation, so support that change. I used the standard WP:MEDMOS section headers, but your changes so far have been fine in my opinion. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 07:04, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, well you've done some good research and rewritten the article comprehensively, well done. Having some "distance" from a subject does help; it's easier to view the text in the role of someone who just wants good information. Parts of the article may still be a bit jargon-y but possibly up to GA standards now. Good luck with your planned nomination and cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:24, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Baffle gab1978, The question always remains whether I have been comprehensive enough, and there is always more that can be said, but I will nominate and see where it goes from here. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:42, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing section name on "Map Projection"

Hello,

Thank you for fixing the name of the section on Map Projection. I didn't notice that at all, and have glanced through the page a few times. Your contributions is much more professional, however it doesn't remind me of the office "best bear" debate, so that is a shame.

Again, just dropping by to say thanks for the fix. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 16:21, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem on Marine construction

Hello Pbsouthwood. Our CopyPatrol system has detected some copying and too-close paraphrasing from Gerwick's book Construction of Marine and Offshore Structures. There's been three different reports so far.

You can click on the iThenticate link in each report to find out what overlap the detection service found. Some bits are too technical for paraphrasing but you need to go back and reword everything from that book in your own words where it is possible to do so. Could you please do this as soon as you can, and let me know when it's done, and I will check the results? Thank you, — Diannaa (talk) 11:58, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Diannaa, I will do that now. I tried to check for myself with Earwig, but it could not find the source so I was getting zeros. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 13:27, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also feel I must point out that some of those claimed/suggested possible infringements are of sources I did not even know existed, and have not used at all. I suspect that I have accidentally used similar phrasing to other people writing on similar topics, because those are the concepts we each wished to convey, using the terminology that applies to the topic and which is in standard use. Coincidence. Sometimes it happens. I don't think I should be required to rewrite things that are already genuinely in my own words, just because someone somewhere that I had no knowledge of, also chose to use those words in that order, for part of a document they wrote on a similar topic. There are a few basic facts that are copied directly from Gerwick because changing them would be misleading. Also, some of the comparisons will not open so I cannot check them. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 13:44, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Diannaa, Make that all of the comparisons with Genwick, which is the only source listed in the reports that I actually have used, making it a bit tricky to work out exactly what the problems are. Can you read the comparisons? I do have a copy of Genwick, but I am usually drastically summarising it, to the extent that some of those matches may even be from pages I have not used for the content I have written. He does tend to repeat himself a bit and his book is about 800 pages long. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 14:10, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was able to find a pirated copy of the book here. Perhaps you could use it to compare the book with the highlighted content in the three iThenticate reports? For example the highlighted content in the first iThenticate report is very close to content on page 79. I searched the pdf using the phrase "corrosion from stored liquids". I have to go to work now and will check back with you later. — Diannaa (talk) 14:27, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I missed this discussion, but the article has now been flagged five times in CopyPatrol and a closer manual review reveals more problems. I sent it to WP:CP. Best, CandyScythe (talk) 15:11, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
CandyScythe, Diannaa Since it is not practicable to do anything about it while the page is blanked, I will wait until I get further feedback. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 15:37, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's an option available to do a rewrite on a temporary page. See the template below for instructions as to how to do that if you wish. — Ninja Diannaa (Talk) 16:52, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Diannaa does this differ in any practical way from rewriting from scratch? Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 17:09, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Whether it's a rewrite or starting from scratch, you at a minimum could save the bare bones such as an outline of the topics to cover, infobox if present, categories, placement of images, and the like. — Diannaa (talk) 18:41, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, is there a way to check whether the tool is going to consider new text a likely infringement before saving it, so when necessary, it can be tweaked as far as necessary, but not too much further, which tends to risk distorting or obscuring the meaning in technical topics. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 17:43, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's no way on-wiki to do this, but there's a few external tools you could try:
