Propose reshuffling featured picture categories

Currently satellite photographs are categorized under Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Space/Looking back rather than a subcategory of Wikipedia:Featured_pictures#Places. For me this is not intuitive as satellite photographs depict places (look at the stuff in that category); in comparison c:Commons:Featured pictures/Places/Satellite images is where I would expect. Should I file requested move at Wikipedia talk:Featured pictures/Space/Looking back or is there a better way to do it? (t · c) buidhe 02:36, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well there are at least two images in there that are not satellite images, so it’s fine where it is. Armbrust The Homunculus 06:48, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help with essay on nominating content

Hi! I've just started a draft over at Draft:Wikipedia:Nominate, and wanted to get some contributions from other people. Essentially, I would like there to be a good essay on Wikipedia that encourages editors to nominate content they haven't created for DYK or FP. In my mind, no one owns stuff here, and as long as the original creator hadn't or was not planning to nominate the content, I think editors should be encouraged to do so if they think Wikipedia would benefit from highlighting it. I thought maybe y'all would be able to contribute a valuable perspective to this essay. A. C. SantacruzPlease ping me! 21:04, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stańczyk (painting) featured picture replaced

@Andrew J.Kurbiko, Bammesk, Mydreamsparrow, Charlesjsharp, David Eppstein, Armbrust, and Adam Cuerden: just a quick query about the image in the above article. The featured picture File:Jan Matejko - Stańczyk - Google Art Project.jpg, which was promoted at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Jan Matejko - Stańczyk - Google Art Project, was replaced by Gytha here - [1] in February 2021. The new version has a higher resolution, and is maybe slightly clearer, but it also has some sort of border on the left, which doesn't seem desirable. Just wanted the opinion of you guys (who supported the original image) as to whether we should switch the article back to using the FP, or if the FP should be delisted and replaced with the new one? Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 19:21, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If that's a issue, I could crop this image (I'll remove the rest of the frame). This file is a cropped and lighter version of the TIFF file File:Jan Matejko, Stańczyk - hi-res tiff.tif, coming directly from the National Museum in Warsaw, where Stańczyk is exhibited. I believe this is the best photo of this painting available - as you pointed out, it shows more details than this one from the Google Art Project. Gytha (talk) 11:11, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
File:Jan Matejko, Stańczyk.jpg is better (higher resolution and more detail). @Gytha: the left edge needs a crop (maybe 15 pixels or so). If you do that then we can do a "delist and replace" nom (I will do the nom if others don't do it first). The current FP at this link is no longer used in any articles, so we should replace it in a "delist and replace" nom. Cheers. Bammesk (talk) 03:10, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded the corrected file. Gytha (talk) 14:32, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. I introduced a delist and replace nomination: here. Bammesk (talk) 02:37, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Featured pictures

There are always some featured images on the main page. How are they selected? What are the criteria? Ivan Knight (talk) 13:29, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:POTD for that. Armbrust The Homunculus 13:40, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
