Primary school killings

Date Location Description
April 9, 1891 Newburgh, New York, USA At St. Mary's Parochial School playground, 70 year old James Foster raised his shotgun, aimed, and deliberately fired into a group of boys playing in the schoolyard. Several students were injured by the lead shot. [1]
May 18 1927 Bath, Michigan, USA Bath School disaster. School board member Andrew Kehoe, upset by a property tax for a new school building which caused the foreclosure of his farm, set up a series of explosions in the Bath elementary school. That morning he killed his wife and set his farm building on fire. While fire fighters were arriving at the farm, an explosion destroyed the north wing of the school. As people gathered outside the school, Kehoe drove up and detonated a bomb inside his shrapnel-filled vehicle. During the rescue efforts, searchers discovered an additional 500 pounds (230 kg) of unexploded dynamite and pyrotol planted throughout the basement of the school's south wing. Forty-five people were killed and 58 were injured. The bombings constituted the deadliest act of mass murder in an elementary school in U.S. history, claiming more than three times as many victims as the Columbine High School massacre.
June 11 1964 Köln-Volkhoven, Germany Cologne school massacre. Armed with a insecticide sprayer converted into a flamethrower, a pike and a homebuilt mace, 42-year-old Walter Seifert entered the Katholische Volksschule and opened fire on the girls playing in the courtyard. He then knocked in classroom windows with his mace and fired inside. Teacher Ursula Kuhr, who tried to prevent him from entering her classroom, was stabbed to death with the pike. Eight children and two teachers died, twenty children and two teachers survived with very severe burns.
January 29 1979 San Diego, California, USA Armed with a .22 rifle she had been given for Christmas, 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire at Cleveland Elementary School. She wounded eight children and one police officer and killed two adults. When the six-hour incident ended, she was asked of her motive for the killing, to which she shrugged and replied "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." Soon after, the Dublin punk band Boomtown Rats wrote the song "I Don't Like Mondays" which was based on the incident.
January 20, 1983 St. Louis, Missouri, USA During a study hall period at Parkway South Junior High school, eighth grader David F. Lawler used two pistols to kill a fifteen-year-old classmate and severely wound another before turning the guns on himself. [15]
May 20, 1988 Winnetka, Illinois, USA 30-year-old Laurie Dann walked into a second grade classroom at Hubbard Woods Elementary School carrying three pistols and began shooting children, killing eight-year-old Nicholas Corwin and wounding five others before fleeing. She entered a nearby house where she shot and wounded a 20-year-old man before killing herself.
September 26, 1988 Greenwood, South Carolina, USA 19 year old James Wilson opened fire at Oakland Elementary School, killing two eight year old girls and wounding nine others, seven of whom were children. He had been taking several psychiatric drugs at the time, including Valium, Halcion, and Xanax.
March 13, 1996 Dunblane, Scotland, United Kingdom Unemployed former shopkeeper and Scout leader Thomas Hamilton walked into Dunblane Primary School armed with two 9 mm Browning HP pistols and two Smith and Wesson .357 revolvers. He was carrying 743 cartridges. He killed sixteen small children and a teacher. The subsequent police investigation revealed that Hamilton had loaded the magazines for his Browning with an alternating combination of fully metal jacketed and hollow point ammunition. This event is known as the Dunblane Massacre, and led to the banning of handguns in the UK with the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997.
June 8, 2001 Ikeda, Osaka, Japan Osaka school massacre; armed with a kitchen knife, a 37-year-old former janitor Mamoru Takuma intruded into Ikeda Elementary School attached to Osaka-Kyoiku University and stabbed school children and teachers. 8 children were killed and 15 wounded among those were 13 children and 2 teachers.
September 1, 2004 Beslan, North Ossetia, Russian Federation The Beslan school hostage crisis (also referred to as the Beslan school siege or Beslan Massacre) began when the group of Muslim pro-Chechen armed rebels took more than 1,200 school children and adults hostage on September 1, 2004, at School Number One (SNO) in the town of Beslan, North Ossetia (an autonomous republic in the Caucasus region of the Russian Federation).

On the third day of the standoff, gunfire broke out between the hostage-takers and Russian security forces. Government reports state that 344 civilians were killed, including 186 children; hundreds more were wounded. Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev took responsibility for the hostage taking, which was led by his Ingush deputy Magomet Yevloyev.

October 2, 2006 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States Amish school shooting. A 32-year-old milk-tank truck driver, took hostages and eventually killed five girls (aged 7–13) and then killed himself at West Nickel Mines School, a one-room Amish schoolhouse.

Secondary school killings

December 30, 1974 Olean, New York, USA 18-year-old honor student Anthony Barbaro blockaded himself into a third story classroom at his high school and opened fire on those below, killing three people and wounding eleven. He later hanged himself while awaiting trial. A drama was written about the incident entitled Sniper.
May 28, 1975 Brampton, Ontario, Canada Centennial Secondary School massacre. Michael Slobodian, 16, killed a teacher and student and wounded 13 others at Brampton Centennial Secondary School in Brampton, Ont., before shooting himself.
October 27, 1975 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada St. Pius X High School massacre. 18-year-old Robert Poulin opened fire on his class at St. Pius X High School, killing one and wounding five before turning the gun on himself. Poulin had raped and stabbed his 17-year-old friend Kim Rabot to death prior to the incident. A book was written on the incident called Rape Of A Normal Mind
January 21, 1985 Kansas, USA Armed with an M-1A Semi-Automatic Rifle and a .357 Pistol, 14 year old James Kearbey fatally shot his principal and wounded 3 other teachers and a student at Goddard Junior High School.
March 2, 1987 Missouri, USA After constant teasing and humiliation about his weight, Nathan Ferris armed himself with a pistol and killed a fellow student after he bullied him in class. He then turned the gun on himself.
May 1, 1992 Olivehurst, California, USA Armed with a pistol, 20-year-old Eric Houston took hostages at his former high school, killing four people and wounding 10. His motive was his inability to find a good job due to the fact that he had failed a grade at school. He was given the death penalty for the shooting. The 1994 Hostage High is directly based on the shooting.
January 18, 1993 Grayson, Kentucky, USA 17-year-old East Carter High School student Scott Pennington fatally shot his English teacher and a school janitor with a pistol.
October 13, 1994 Greensboro, North Carolina, USA The Grimsley High School shooting occurred when 16-year-old Nicholas Atkinson entered the school campus at the end of the school day (about 3:20 pm), shot an assistant principal named Bill Whites, before shooting himself in the head. White's bullet wound was non-fatal. Atkinson died that evening at Moses Cone Hospital. Atkinson had been in trouble with the law and had recently been suspended from school by Whites.
November 15, 1995 Lynnville, Tennessee, USA The Richland High School shooting occurred when 17-year-old Jamie Rouse walked into the Richland School and shot two teachers in the head, killing one, armed with a .22 Remington Viper. He then fired at the football coach, but hit a 14-year-old freshman in the neck, wounding her.
February 2, 1996 Moses Lake, Washington, USA Armed with a high-powered hunting rifle and two handguns, 14-year-old Barry Loukaitis killed his algebra teacher and two students before taking hostages. He also shot a girl in the arm, who he released during the hostage situation. The incident ended when a teacher burst into the room and tackled him. Loukaitis is now serving life in prison.
February 19, 1997 Bethel, Alaska, USA Armed with a pump-action 12 gauge shotgun, Evan Ramsey killed a student and the principal of Bethel High School, and wounded two others. He is now serving a 210 year sentence.
October 1, 1997 Pearl, Mississippi, USA 16-year-old Luke Woodham stabbed and beat his mother to death, then took a lever-action rifle to Pearl High School where he shot into a crowd of students, killing his ex-girlfriend Christina Menefee and her friend Lydia Kay Dew and wounded seven other students. Woodham later claimed that he did not remember killing his mother.
December 2, 1997 West Paducah, Kentucky, USA A 14-year old high school freshman opened fire on a prayer circle at his school killing three students and injuring five.[2]
March 24, 1998 Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA 13-year-old Mitchell Johnson and 11-year-old Andrew Golden set off the fire alarm in their Jonesboro school and then, from the woods, open fire on classmates and teachers as they flee the building. Four female students and a teacher are killed, with nine other students and a teacher being wounded in the Jonesboro massacre.
April 24, 1998 Edinboro, Pennsylvania, USA 14-year-old Andrew J. Wurst went to the school graduation dance where he shot and killed a popular science teacher. He subsequently opened fire on more students, wounding another teacher and two classmates before he ran out of ammunition.
May 21, 1998 Springfield, Oregon, USA Kip Kinkel opened fire with a .22 rifle at Thurston Senior High School, killing 2 students and wounding 25 before being tackled by a wounded student. His parents were later found at home, murdered by Kinkel. He is now serving 111 years in prison without parole.
April 20, 1999 Littleton, Colorado, USA Columbine High School Massacre. Two teenage students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, carried out a shooting rampage, killing 12 students and a teacher, as well as wounding 24 others, before committing suicide.
April 28, 1999 Taber, Alberta, Canada W. R. Myers High School shooting. In both the first school shooting since Columbine and the first Canadian school shooting in over 10 years, Todd Cameron Smith brought a sawn-off .22 rifle to W.R Myers High School and shot two students, killing one.
March 16, 2000 Brannenburg, Bavaria, Germany A 16 year old student fatally shot a teacher and then turned the handgun on himself but survived, and has been in a coma ever since.[3]
March 5, 2001 Santee, California, USA Armed with .22 revolver, 15-year-old Charles Andrew Williams opened fire in a boy's bathroom at Santana High School, killing two students. He then exited the bathroom and shot at nearby students, wounding 13. Shortly afterwards he retreated back into the toilets where he surrendered to police.
April 26, 2002 Erfurt, Germany A 19 year old expelled student opened fire at the Gutenberg-Gymnasium in Erfurt, After killing 13 teachers, two students and a police officer, he committed suicide.
April 29, 2002 Vlasenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina Armed with a 7.65mm pistol, 17-year-old Dragoslav Petkovic killed his history teacher because he was sure that the teacher did not like him and would give him a failing grade. He then shot another teacher in front of the whole classroom, wounding her lightly, before committing suicide.
April 14, 2003 New Orleans, Louisiana, USA At 10:30 AM, several men armed with an AK-47 entered the school gymnasium of John McDonogh High School and executed Jonathan "Caveman" Williams, a football player. The killers fired at least 18 times, shattering Williams' face and injuring three neighboring girls. A stampede of students trampled a pregnant girl.[4][5][6]
April 24, 2003 Red Lion, Pennsylvania, USA Red Lion Area Junior High School Murder/Suicide. 14-year-old James Sheets fatally shot his school principal in the cafeteria of his middle school before committing suicide.
September 24, 2003 Cold Spring, Minnesota, USA Rocori High School shooting. 15-year-old Jason McLaughlin shot Aaron Rollins and Seth Bartell at Rocori High School with a .22 pistol. Rollins died the same day; Bartell died October 10 of injuries sustained in the attack.[7]
February 2, 2004 Washington, D.C., USA 19 year old Thomas J. Boykin fatally shot 17 year old James Richardson at Ballou Senior High School. Boykin was later acquitted on the charge of murder.[8]
February 3, 2004 Palmetto Bay, Florida, USA 14-year old Michael Hernandez stabbed and slit the throat of a 14-year-old classmate, Jaime Rodrigo Gough, while in a restroom at Southwood Middle School. Hernandez was tried as an adult, and sentenced to life in prison without parole. A search of his home revealed he had concocted plans to murder several classmates and even his older sister. His journal revealed he was obsessed with perfection, and admired Hitler and the Nazis.

Armed with his father's 9mm pistol, a 15-year-old boy opened fire on his classmates during a flag-hoisting, killing 3 students and wounding 5 others.
November 26, 2004 Ruzhou, China With no apparent motive, an intruder stabbed eight students to death and injured four others at Ruzhou's Number Two High School in the sixth such incident in China in the past four months.[9]
March 21, 2005 Red Lake, Minnesota, USA Red Lake High School massacre. Jeffrey Weise, a student at Red Lake High School in Red Lake, Beltrami County, Minnesota, killed seven people including a teacher and a security guard.
November 8, 2005 Jacksboro, Tennessee, USA After reports that a freshman had a handgun, the principal and two assistant principals confronted student Kenneth Bartley Jr., who opened fire on them, killing one of the assistant principals and wounding the two others.
September 27, 2006 Bailey, Colorado, USA A gunman, later identified as 53-year-old Duane Morrison of Denver, took six female students hostage at Platte Canyon High School. After sexually assaulting some of them, he released four of the hostages. When 16-year-old Emily Keyes tried to run away, Morrison shot her in the back of the head before killing himself. Keyes was flown to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver, where she died a short time later. [10][11]
January 26, 2007 Uninc. Los Angeles County, California USA Gang members entered Drew Middle School and opened fire. A 23-year old visitor named Demetrius Perry died.[12]
March 7, 2007 Midland, Michigan, USA 17-year old David Turner shot 17-year old Jessica Forsyth four times outside Dow High School before killing himself in the parking lot. [13]
March 18, 2007 Sabayoi, Thailand A number of attackers threw explosives and fired numerous bullets at an Islamic school killing 3 teens and injured 7 others who were sleeping.[14]

Post-secondary school killings

June 4, 1936 Bethlehem, PA, USA Wesley Crow shot and killed his Lehigh University English instructor, C. Wesley Phy. Crow went to Phy's office and demanded that Mr. Phy change his grade to a passing mark. Crow committed suicide after shooting Phy. [15]
November 13, 1949 Columbus, OH, USA Ohio State University freshman James Heer of Euclid, OH grabbed a .45 caliber handgun from the room of a Delta Tau Delta fraternity brother and shot and killed Jack McKeown, 21, of Norwood, OH, a Ohio State senior and fraternity brother. [16]
May 15, 1954 Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Putnam Davis Jr. was shot and killed during a fraternity house carnival at the Phi Delta Theta house at the University of North Carolina. William Joyner and Allen Long were shot and wounded during the exchange of gunfire in their fraternity bedroom. The incident took place after an all night beer party. Mr. Long reported to the police that, while the three were drinking beer at 7am, Davis pulled out a gun and started shooting with a gun he had obtained from the car of a former roommate. [17]
August 1, 1966 Austin, Texas, USA Charles Whitman pointed a rifle from the observation deck of the University of Texas at Austin's Tower and began shooting in a homicidal rampage that went on for 96 minutes. Sixteen people were killed, 31 wounded.
April 5, 1982 Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA Kelvin Love, a student at Garland County Community College, killed an instructor and another student.
December 17, 1983 Ithaca, New York, USA Non-student Su Yong Kim enters the Low Rise 7 dormitory and kills Cornell University freshmen Young Hee Suh and Erin Nieswand with a rifle. [16]
December 6, 1989 Montreal, Canada In the École Polytechnique massacre, Marc Lépine took a hunting rifle into École Polytechnique de Montréal, killed 14 women, wounded four men and ten women before committing suicide. It remains to this day the worst massacre in Canadian history, and third to only the Virginia Tech massacre, and the University of Texas at Austin massacre in North American school shootings.
November 1, 1991 Iowa City, Iowa, USA After his dissertation did not win a certain academic award, Ph.D. physics student Gang Lu shot six people before committing suicide. Five were killed, including three professors. A student employee was paralyzed.
August 24, 1992 Montreal, Quebec, Canada Former professor Dr. Valery Fabrikant went on a shooting rampage at Montreal's Concordia University killing four. Was the second school shooting to happen in the same city, Montreal.
December 14, 1992 Great Barrington, Massachusetts, USA Armed with a SKS carbine, 18-year-old Simon's Rock College of Bard student Wayne Lo killed a professor and a student and wounded several others. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
September 17, 1996 University Park, Pennsylvania, USA In the Hetzel Union Building shooting at The Pennsylvania State University, 19 year old Jillian Robbins opened fire on students walking to classes, killing one student and wounding another.
October 16, 1996 West Lafayette, Indiana, USA On October 15, 1996 Jay Severson, 27 a Wiley Hall counselor at Purdue University caught Jarrod Allen Eskew, 19 of Crawfordsville, Indiana cutting cocaine in his dorm room. Severson called the Purdue Police Department but when they arrived Eskew had fled. Eskew returned the next day at 2:50 pm with a sawed off 12-gauge shotgun while under the influence of both marijuana and cocaine. Eskew went to Severson's Wiley Hall dorm room and fatally shot Severson in the head. He then barricaded himself in his third floor dorm room. A janitor found the body a short time later. SWAT and police took up positions around Wiley Hall. Police evacuated Wiley Hall, attempted to negotiate, fired tear gas, and stormed the room to find Eskew had taken his own life with the shotgun. August 3, 1999 Latrobe University, Melbourne, Australia The incident took place at 11:05 am when a man walked into the Eagle Bar on the La Trobe Bundoora campus armed with a .38-calibre revolver and shot and wounded a young woman before shooting bar manager Leon Capraro, killing him instantly. He then attempted to shoot at others but was restrained by patrons until police came and arrested him.
January 16, 2002 Grundy, Virginia, USA Appalachian School of Law shooting. 43-year-old Appalachian School of Law student Peter Odighizuwa shot and killed the Law School Dean, Contracts Professor and another student; three others were wounded . The incident was ended when two students with personal firearms subdued the shooter. He was sentenced to multiple life terms in prison. Peter 'O' was a Nigerian student attending the school on a student visa. The school later settled a lawsuit by some of the surviving victims and their families brought over the schools failure to take action when the student showed signs of psychosis and made threats.
October 21, 2002 Melbourne, Australia Monash University shooting. Huan Xiang, a commerce student at the university, armed with five loaded handguns, opened fire in a tutorial room. Two students, William Wu and Steven Chan, were killed and others seriously wounded. Xiang was found not guilty of murder due to mental illness, and was ordered to be sent to a psychiatric hospital.
October 28, 2002 Tucson, Arizona, USA Three nursing professors are shot dead at the University of Arizona by a student failing the nursing program. Robert J. Flores, Jr., 41, shot and killed Robin Rogers, 50, Barbara Monroe, 45, and Cheryl McGaffic, 44 before turning the gun on himself. Two of the teachers were shot in a classroom and the gunman allowed the students to leave before killing himself.
May 9, 2003 Cleveland, Ohio, USA Biswanath Halder, a 62-year-old man, opened fire with an automatic weapon on his former school, Case Western Reserve University. He killed one student, seriously wounded two others, and kept over 90 people hiding for their lives for seven hours. After vigorous and bullet-ridden gun battles with school police and SWAT officers, Halder surrendered and was sentenced to life in prison.
January 13, 2004 Den Haag, The Netherlands Murat D. killed Hans van Wieren, a 49-year-old teacher and vice principal at Terra College.
August 4, 2004 Beijing, China Xu Heping, a 51-year-old doorman with a history of mental illness, stabbed several students and teachers in Beijing University's Number One Hospital, killing a child and wounding 17 others, 14 of whom were children.
September 3, 2006 Shepherdstown, West Virginia, USA Douglas W. Pennington, 49, killed his sons Logan P. Pennington, 26, and Benjamin M. Pennington, 24, during a visit to the campus at Shepherd University before shooting and killing himself. The shootings occurred at about 2 p.m.[17].
September 13, 2006 Montreal, Quebec, Canada The Dawson College shooting occurred on September 13, 2006 at Dawson College, a CEGEP in Westmount near downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The perpetrator, Kimveer Gill, began shooting outside the de Maisonneuve Boulevard entrance to the school, and moved towards the atrium by the cafeteria on the main floor. One victim died later in the next day due to her serious injuries at the hospital, while another 19 were injured, eight of whom were listed in critical condition with six requiring surgery. The gunman later committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, after being shot in the arm by police. The Dawson incident became the unprecedented third fatal school shooting in the city. Montreal holds the terrible distinguished record for having the most school shootings in the same city; no other city on Earth has had more than one.
April 16, 2007 Blacksburg, Virginia, USA The Virginia Tech massacre was the single most deadly civilian gunfire incident in American higher education history. It occurred at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Thirty-three people were killed including the gunman (Cho Seung-hui) in two separate locations: the West Ambler Johnston Hall where two were shot dead and Norris Hall where the remaining 31, including the gunman, were shot. Over 20 others were injured in the violence that spanned 2 hours.
April 18, 2007 Huntersville, North Carolina, USA A 16-year-old threatened students in the parking lot at North Mecklenberg High School with a gun and shot himself at a local gas station when confronted by police. Four Charlotte-Mecklenberg schools went on lockdown.

Non-fatal school shootings and attacks

June 17, 1994 Holywood, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom A former pupil bearing a grudge entered an assembly hall at Sullivan Upper School and used a flamethrower to attack students taking A-Level examinations. Six were injured, three seriously.
October 12, 1994 Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Nicholas Atkinson, a 16 year old Grimsley High School student, returned to campus after being suspended and shot and wounded the assistant principal with a 9mm handgun before committing suicide.[20]

Horrett Campbell, a 33-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia, invaded a teddy bears' picnic being held at St Luke's Primary School and slashed three young children and four adults with a machete. Lisa Potts, a 20-year-old nursery nurse, was awarded the George Medal for saving children's lives despite suffering severe injuries.
October, 1996 Queensland, Australia Paul Streeton set six year old Tjandamurra O'Shane on fire in the playground of his school, burning over 70% of his body. The motive was apparently racism due to the boy's aboriginal background.
May 21, 1998 Jersey Village, Texas, USA In Jersey Village High School, a 17-year-old’s gun accidentally discharged in his backpack, wounding a nearby girl [18].
June 15, 1998 Richmond, Virginia, USA 14-year-old Quinshawn Booker fired a pistol in a crowded hallway of Armstrong High School, injuring two adults, as other students were taking final exams.
May 20, 1999 Conyers, Georgia, USA 15-year-old Thomas J. Solomon used a .22 rifle and .357 handgun to wound six classmates at Heritage High School before surrendering to a teacher.
December 6, 1999 Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, USA Armed with a 9mm pistol and carrying over 100 rounds of ammunition, 13 year old Seth Trickey opened fire on a crowd of students, wounding four.
December 7, 1999 Veghel, The Netherlands A 17-year-old student opened fire in a computer room at The Leijgraaf school (high school) wounding four classmates and a teacher. He then surrendered to the police without a struggle.
April 20, 2000 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada A year after the Columbine massacre, a student attacked and injured four students and a school clerk with a butcher knife at Carine Wilson High School in the suburb of Orleans.
October, 2000 Glendale, Arizona, USA Sean Botkin armed with a S&W Sigma 9mm. infiltrated Pioneer wearing a Russian BDU (battle dress uniform) with communist hammer and sickle insignias, to hold his former 8th grade class hostage for several hours. He first ordered everybody on the floor, and made them relocate to a corner of the room in groups. Immediately afterwards, he ordered his former teacher to call the front office and locate a police negotiator. As a result, the main office issued a "code 9" emergeny lockdown of the campus, in which aggravated Botkin. After police negotiators discovered Botkin had extensive knowledge on the subject of firearms and homemade explosives, a bomb squad team searched the outside premisis of the building for the possibility of "booby traps." However, the only demand Botkin made was that Glendale police order all news and police helicopters to disperse from the surrounding airspace, that was apparently aggrivating Botkin. Due to Botkins communist affiliation, law enforcement was concerned of this situation being a "terrorist attack" or "political statement." After several hours of negotiation, Botkin released hostages periodically in groups of ten. The situation eventually ended peacefully with Botkin surrendering to the police.
March 7, 2001 Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA An eighth grade girl injured another eighth grade girl at Bishop Neumann Junior-Senior High School. This was the first time a shooting occurred in a Catholic school and one of only four known incidents in which the main perpetrator was female.

February 9, 2004 East Greenbush, New York, USA Jon William Romano brought a 12-gauge Winchester shot-gun into Columbia High School and text messaged his friends from the bathroom to "get out" and minutes later began walking through the hallways and firing shots. One teacher was hit in the leg and no other people were shot.

September, 2004 Suzhou, China A man armed with a knife and homemade explosives attacked 28 children at a kindergarten.
September 27, 2004 Romeo, Michigan, USA Former Romeo High School student Eric Schorling entered the school and stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Lambert, in the back with a kitchen knife as she walked to class. Schorling was convicted of assault with attempt to murder; Lambert has since recovered.
October 21, 2005 Saginaw, Michigan, USA 16-year-old Clarence Russell III shot Daniel Foster in the halls of Saginaw High School. Russell[19] [20].
February, 2006 Bellaire, Texas, USA A boy at Bellaire High School stabbed another boy in a stairwell. The victim survived the stabbing, and the attacker was arrested and prosecuted.
February 23, 2006 Roseburg, Oregon, USA 14-year-old Vincent Leodoro stole a 10 mm handgun from his stepfather's home and brought it to school where he shot 15 year old Joseph Monti in the back. When Monti fell to the ground, Leodoro shot Monti a further 3 times.
March 14, 2006 Reno, Nevada, USA Pine Middle School shooting. 14-year-old James Newman brought his father's revolver to Pine Middle School and wounded two students. He was sentenced to house arrest and community service, which outraged several members of the public when he was not sentenced to prison.
August 30, 2006 Hillsborough, North Carolina, USA 19-year-old Alvaro Rafael Castillo opened fire at Orange High School with a rifle and shotgun, shooting eight times and wounding two students. Officers ordered him to stop firing and he immediately complied. Castillo killed his father with a firearm before driving to school in a van. In the van police officers found ammunition, pipe bombs, and other weapons. Castillo will be charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father while charges for the school shooting are pending.[21]
September 8, 2006 Paris, France A 16-year-old boy shoots with a shotgun in his school wounding a teacher and a student.
September 17, 2006 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Shots are fired outside Duquesne University's Vickroy Hall after a dance party sponsored by the Black Student Union which several non-students were attending. Five members of the Duquesne Dukes basketball team were injured during the shooting including one who sustained critical injuries after an argument between 1 individual and 2 students.
October 6, 2006 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada A student was stabbed in a knife attack near Woodroffe High School causing the complete lockdown at the school[22]
November 20, 2006 Emsdetten, Germany An 18-year-old former student entered the Geschwister Scholl school in western Germany with 2 sawed off shotguns and an explosive device, and injured a teacher, 9 students, the school janitor, and 16 police officers. Police stormed the building, and the shooter released several smoke bombs as he retreated to the third floor, which caused most of the police injuries due to smoke inhalation. The suspect apparently killed himself, although it was unclear why he didn't detonate the pipe bombs strapped to his chest. Police later found a suicide note on the man's website explaining he was "generally frustrated" and didn't see a reason to live. The site also contained pictures of the man brandishing various types of rifles. He had been scheduled to appear in court on November 21, 2006, on an unrelated charge of carrying a handgun in public.
April 10, 2007 Gresham, Oregon, USA High school freshman Chad Escobedo shoots the windows out of two classrooms from outside Springwater Trail High School injuring ten students with shrapnel and broken glass, two of which required stitches. His motive was to shoot at a class in which he was enrolled, unhappy that the instructor had called his parents; the classrooms he hit, however, were not his intended target [23].

Jan 30, 2001 Cupertino, California, USA De Anza College student Al DeGuzman planned a Columbine style school shooting at the school. An employee at a Longs Drugs store developed pictures of DeGuzman posing with his guns and homemade bombs. She and a coworker called police. DeGuzman was arrested when he returned for his photos. Police found Deguzman's bedroom stacked from top to bottom with sophisticated handmade bombs and a map of De Anza College, marked with locations where bombs would be placed. [24]

September 2004 Clinton Township, Michigan, USA Chippewa Valley High School student Andrew Osantowski revealed his plans for a Columbine-style massacre at the school in an Internet chat with a friend. The friend alerted police, who found a number of stolen weapons, including an AK-47, and Nazi paraphernalia in Osantowski's house. A neighbor who allegedly coached the teenager in making bombs was also arrested. Osantowski was later found guilty of terrorism and felony firearm violations.
February 2005 Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, USA Sheboygan Falls High School A student left a threatening note on bathroom sink which a janitor discovered. The note said to F*** everybody. This was a bomb threat with a detonation time set for approximately 9:23 AM (CST). However the plot was foiled.
March 2006 Sydney, NSW, Australia After hearing of students planning to assault their suburban high school, police searched a suspect's house and found plans to bomb the school, along with books such as The Anarchist Cookbook, which the student was using to learn how to make a bomb.
March 2 2006 Muscatine, Iowa, USA On March 1, 2006, Muscatine High School student, Joseph Titus, was arrested at his parents’ home after he sent a message to a friend on the internet that said he planned to bring a bomb to school. Law-enforcement officials found materials that could be used to make a bomb in the young man’s home. No violent acts were committed but the teen was sentenced to a prison term.
March 3 2006 Greenwood, Indiana, USA Three 15-year-old boys and one 16-year-old boy were arrested for attempting to hold Center Grove High School hostage using guns. Their claim was they were tired of athletes making fun of them. [25]
April 20 2006 Riverton, Kansas, USA Five students, ages 16-18, planned to kill a dozen potential victims, including a staff member at Riverton High School. The students revealed on April 19 on MySpace that they were going to commit the school shooting. The five teens planned to dress in black trench coats and shoot out the school security cameras. Authorities arrested four of the students at their homes and the other on campus on April 20 when a woman alerted them to the postings on MySpace.com about the plot. When the students' homes were searched, guns, ammunition, and knives were found. Prosecutors will charge the five students with conspiracy to commit murder. The school shooting was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting and Adolf Hitler's birthday[26]

April 22 2006 North Pole, Alaska, USA Six middle-school students were arrested after it was revealed they planned to kill students and faculty members. The students intended to use knives and guns, while also disabling the power and telephone systems at the school. Unlike most other school shootings, the students planned to kill selected students and faculty and then escape the school. The plot was exposed when a student told one of his parents about rumors of the upcoming school shooting and the parent contacted authorities. According to authorities, the six students could face charges for first-degree conspiracy to commit murder. [28]
April 23, 2006 Pearl, Mississippi, USA Two students from Pearl Junior High were arrested and charged with making threatening statements to fellow classmates. They broadcast their intentions on the Web site Xanga, warning students not to go to class on May 1, 2006. On the site, the students used the alias of Luke Woodham, the student who killed his mother and two students at Pearl High School in 1997. [29]
April 24, 2006 Puyallup, Washington, USA Brian Michael Evans, 16, was arrested after plotting to shoot people at his school. He was caught when he sent an instant message to another student, who reported him. Evans allegedly had planned to attack the school and then commit suicide afterward. In the message, the sender claimed he wanted "to finally go out in a blaze of hatred and fury". When Evans' house was searched, a home-made bomb, and a CD detailing how to make bombs, were found. June 2, 2006 Utica, New York, USA Two gangs at Proctor High School in Utica, New York, were rumored to shoot at each other during school after one of the gang's members, Keith Moore, was killed the night before. Most of the students either left the school or signed out, but nothing happened.
September 15, 2006 Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Bradley Netwal, 19, and William Cornell, 17 and Shawn Sturtz, 18 were arrested conspiracy to commit first-degree intentional homicide and conspiracy to commit damage to property by means of explosives at Green Bay East High School. News reports said they were depressed and were fascinated with Columbine. Cornell also faces a weapons and explosive charge for weapons found in his home.
September 18, 2006 Hudson, Quebec, Canada A 15-year-old was arrested after uttering death threats via the same Internet site as Dawson College shooter Kimveer Gill. He was planning a similar type shooting at a high school west of Montreal [31].
September 22, 2006 Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Morgan Little Wolf, a 12-year-old sixth grader called a bomb threat at Taft Middle School. Many children and teachers stayed home, and the school was evacuated for fifteen minutes, but nothing happened. Little Wolf was then expelled after the incident.
October 2, 2006 Cincinnati, Ohio, USA A 15-year-old freshman was arrested at his home when he sent a text message threatening to bring his gun to a local high school. The school was locked down while police arrested the suspect, but re-opened in time for classes. [32]
October 6 2006 Kernersville, North Carolina A message was found on a bathroom wall at East Forsyth High School on Tuesday stating there would be a school shooting at 9 A.M.on Friday it also included a racial message. Security was raised, students were kept at home, while few went to school. Nothing happened at 9 A.M.
October 2006 Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada A 14-year-old student at Bridgewater Junior-Senior High School was arrested on several charges after he threatened to kill several students at the school. Many students stayed home for fear of a shooting, but nothing happened. There was also rumored to be a shooting at nearby Parkview High, but this was also foiled.
March 5, 2007 Barrington, Rhode Island, United States One teen and one adult were arrested after one of them phoned in a bomb threat to Barrington High School. No one was hurt and nothing happened.
March 16, 2007 Riner, Virginia, United States Two teens were arrested for conspiracy to commit murder, after one of them planned to shoot the Auburn Middle School's principal and other people. A gun and some ammunition were recovered from one of the suspects. [21]
April 13, 2007 Calgary, Alberta, Canada A 14-year-old student at St. Gregory Junior High School was arrested on charges relating to a plan to murder at least 2 of his teachers. An assault rifle and a plan were recovered at his home.[22]
April 18, 2007 Jacksonville, Florida, USA A 14-year-old male student at Bartram Trail High School was arrested in making a e-mail threat to a friend saying that he wanted to top the record of killing 33 people at school (previously set by the Virginia Tech massacre), by killing 100 people. The parent of the friend saw the e-mail and reported it to police. He was charged with the "threat to throw, project, place or discharge any destructive device". Similar threats were apparently made earlier in the week, but went unreported. [23]
April 27, 2007 La Plata, Maryland, USA A rumor at La Plata High school in La Plata, Maryland led to additional officers being at the school and nearly half the students staying home. The rumor started with the message "if you thought the VA Tech shooting was bad, just wait" being scralled on the bathroom wall. The shooting, which was rumored to occur towards the end of the day, did not happen. There have been suspects, but no arrests were made.

January 8, 1991 Richardson, Texas, United States Jeremy Wade Delle brought a .357 magnum to Richardson High School and committed suicide in front of his class of about 30 students. This incident inspired Pearl Jam's song Jeremy. [33] [34]
March 25, 1994 Uninc. Cherokee County, Georgia, United States Brian Head, 15, shot and killed himself during his high school economics class at Etowah High School. Head had been a longtime target for bullies because of his weight and thick glasses. His father, Bill, subsequently successfully lobbied for a law that criminalized bullying and required schools to alert parents of bullied children.
May 26, 1994 Union, Kentucky, United States Clay Shrout kills his family and holds hostages later at school. [35]
October 1, 2001 Modbury High School, South Australia, Australia A 16 year old boy commits suicide on a library balcony in front of teachers and students with a .303 rifle, the first fatal school shooting in South Australia's history.
October 7, 2004 Newburyport, Massachusetts, United States A 15 year old boy committed suicide near his high school. He was reportedly despondent after breaking up with his girlfriend.
December 10, 2004 Nine Mile Falls, Washington, United States A 16 year old boy killed himself with a handgun in his high school and the gunshot sent the faculty into panic, causing them to lockdown the school. A canister containing fireworks, shotgun shells and rifle cartridges was later found in the boy's backpack.
January 13, 2006 Longwood, Florida, United States 15 year old Chris Penley brought a handgun to Milwee Middle School, and held his class hostage for a short time before eventually being fatally shot in a bathroom by police. It was soon discovered that the gun was actually a pellet gun, causing controversy over whether his death was justified.
May 25, 2006 Northampton, Pennsylvania, United States An 18 year old Max Brotzman brought a 22-caliber rifle, among other weapons, into school in a guitar case to kill himself. He did not succeed.
September 14, 2006 Ottawa, Ontario, Canada A 22 year old university law student fired a pellet gun at one of the buildings of the University of Ottawa in a drive-by shooting. He was quickly arrested at his home and was subsequently banned from the University. No one was injured.[36]
September 16, 2006 St. Louis, Missouri, United States A senior student of Westminster High School, Austin Vincent, reportedly text-messaged his friend, saying he would commit suicide. This was later forwarded to a counselor, who called the police. He did not attend school on September 16. School got out at 3:00, and he arrived around 3:45. He got out of his mother's car holding a rifle. Police were already on the scene. Vincent reportedly pointed the rifle at his head, then waved it at the police. Officers took 3 shots, and he was hit in the leg by at least one. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition. He would later be tried as an adult.[37]
October 2, 2006 Las Vegas, Nevada, United States An ex-student of Mojave High School went on campus with a gun, his motive unknown at the time. Students recognized him as not being a student anymore and notified school police immediately. The suspect ran from the school and ditched his gun behind a church close to Mojave. Mojave, as well as 3 middle schools and 1 elementary school were placed on lockdown while police searched for him.
October 4, 2006 Evans, Georgia, United States On October 4, 2006 an unknown student at Evans High School, Evans, Georgia posted a threat in the boys' bathroom wall promising bloodshed on October 4. 2006. It was quoted to say " The Blood of The Innocent Will Run at Evans on October 4 ." The school was placed on lockdown but no attacks were commenced.
October 9, 2006 Joplin, Missouri, United States A 13-year-old student fired a cheap imitation AK-47 inside his middle school after confronting two others students and his principal. The student was wearing a mask and had pointed the gun at Principal Steve Gilbreth, Assistant Superintendent Steve Doerr and two students, saying, "please don't make me do this". After firing a shot into the ceiling and breaking a water pipe, the student's gun jammed when he attempted to fire additional shots. The student was then confronted by police officers and taken into custody. The identity of this student is yet to be released. Officers also found a note in the student's backpack indicating that he had placed an explosive in the school (which has 700 students). No one was injured in the incident.[38]
October 17, 2006 Uninc. Fort Bend County, Texas, United States A Seven Lakes High School student committed suicide outside the cafeteria. The school was forced into lockdown for about two hours while the school officials fielded concerns of worried parents, who found out via texting of Seven Lakes students. No other students were hurt, nor did the teen plan on hurting any other student. Though he was not pronounced dead immediately, he was declared DOA as soon as his parents were notified.
April 3, 2007 Anna, Texas, United States A former student of Anna High School brought a gun to the school and threatened to commit suicide. The school went on lockdown for about two hours.
