Roja (1992) is a Tamil movie directed by Mani Ratnam, one of the leading filmmakers in India. The movie was subsequently dubbed into Telugu and Hindi and catapulted Mani Ratnam to national acclaim. This movie's soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman, who debuted in this movie, and who would rise to become a nationally famous musician soon after. This soundtrack is among the All Time Top 10 soundtracks listed by TIME magazine (The list). The film was recently released for international audiences in light of the growing fear of terrorist attacks the world over.


Plot summary

The movie starts off with a top cryptologist Rishi (Arvind Swamy) marrying a village girl, Roja (Madhoo) in Southern Tamil Nadu. In the meantime Rishi is assigned a posting at an army communications center in Kashmir.

During his tenure, Rishi is captured by terrorists who want the release of their terrorist leader from prison. The movie is set against the backdrop of the longstanding struggle between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.
