Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! If you're new to our community, drop us a note here and tell us a little bit about yourself. Most important, we would like to know about your interests (for which we have a separate page), your areas of knowledge, and the sorts of things you'd like to work on here at Wikipedia. That makes it easier for us to help you start editing. We'd also appreciate it if you told us how you found out about Wikipedia.

To add yourself to the list:
  • post a comment,
  • enter your name as the subject/headline (which will make a new header for you in the log), and
  • sign your name at the end of your comment by typing four tildes: ~~~~. (This code makes a link to your user page, which readers can use to welcome you personally if they like).
Your comments will then be added to the bottom of the list.

You may also like to add yourself to other lists, such as the listing in order of arrival, by country, or by skills (such as translation or photography). Finally, if you want a little personal assistance in using or contributing to the site, you might go through one of the Bootcamps.

An automatically generated list of new users can be found at Special:Log/Newusers.

Hello,

Just wanted to give a quick "Hello" and introduction to current Wikipedians.

My name is Ian Franzen, and I am an 18 year old student, currently attending Bryant University. I am originally from Ridgefield, Connecticut.

I have been using Wikipedia for a few years (it came in very handy during my high school years). Just recently, I became increasingly interested in how Wikipedia operated. I always knew it was "open to editing" by anyone, but I never really understood how community-based it really was. I am very eager to contribute to the community in any way I can.

I am skilled in Adobe Photoshop, HTML, and web design (but no expert). I also am very good at personal research, and have worked with multiple companies to perform personal investigations. However, my current interests center on Philosophy, specifically Jean-Paul Sartre. I am actually transferring from Bryant next year to major in this subject. I am thinking about pursuing an advanced degree.

Although I feel like I have adequate knowledge and background in research to contribute to Wikipedia, my grammar and spelling skills are quite lacking. I would like to improve my spelling and grammar skills.

Please keep up your excellent work, and have a happy New Year.

Hey, all. I've been an avid reader of Wikipedia for awhile, now, and have contributed minor edits along the line. I hope to add my first article sometime within the next couple of days.

Interests include music (obviously), theater, the combination thereof, Canada, literature, Phish, mathematics, disenfranchised French youths, and rice pudding.

I live in the artistic and intellectual void of South Jersey, USA.

I have the coolest Dalmatian in the world, Daisy. (Named after Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby.)

Firemoth

Hi,

I've been using Wikipedia for a while now, but have only just recently made an account. For the past few days I have been making the odd edit, none of them major. I hope in the future I can contribute by creating new articles and improving the already existing ones more than I already have.

Now a little about myself.

My name is Justin, I am 22 years of age. I was born in Geelong, Australia, which is also where I currently live. My knowledge is based mostly around Computers and the Internet, which is what I have just finished studying. I also have a large amount of interests, too many to list, however some of them are:

  • Films & Documentaries.
  • Science Fiction Television Shows.
  • Military History and Technology. (Slowly increasing my knowledge of this one).
  • Computers, The Internet and Gaming.

Soon I'll be putting a little information about myself on my User:Firemoth page, so Hopefully I haven't gone into too much detail in this introduction.

If you've read everything above that I've said, thank you for taking the time to read it.

Greetings, all! Like many other Wikipedians, I came by this site first for research purposes, and then for pleasure (I'd pick a topic, read the article, and then just start clicking—I can spend hours doing that). I'm a bit of a grammar and usage nut, so I started doing minor edits by correcting spelling and grammatical problems in the articles I read, which is how I really started getting "involved" here. I don't have one particular area of interest, but I will happily read just about anything. Esrever 06:01, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

John Chunko, no relation to the candy bar...

Hi all... neat project indeed, smartly done. Nice place to spend some of my spare time... it reminds me of the great encyclopedia project in Asimov's Foundation novels... thousands of encyclopediaists working for hundreds of years to create the Encyclopedia Galactica... who knows how long this project might live... eons?... well, let's hope.

I'm 57, Cornell educated (grad.), and cut my teeth in the advertising business selling big-ticket space programs (print media)... now I own a new media company which produces Affinity Alliances for Fortune 100 companies.

Hobby-wise, I'm the publisher of www.CigarNexus.com (started back around 1997), and my other hobbies are based mainly around collecting: pocket knives; chinese firecracker labels; vintage wines (I own the oldest bottle of wine in the world, a 1646 Imperial Tokay, entered officially in the 1993 Guiness World Records tome); sci-fi comics from the gold and silver ages; fountain pens; pinball & slot machines; and US coins and stamps.

I'm a futurist moderate and apolitical. My favorite place in the world is St. John, USVI. Best thing I ever did was have two wonderful children, they teach me everyday. And, I love to write.

Well, that should be sufficeint to get me into some trouble around here... look forward to hearing from you. Regards ...JC 17:27, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thomas. I suggest you create an account on Wikipedia, then repost here what user account name you used. Yhis is because, due to some unfortunate vandalism, which you may have read about in the news, there has been a change in Wiki policy, reducing what can be edited, or started, by a person who is known only to Wiki by their IP address. I am a lawyer qualified in England. I also have a degree in Geography from Cambridge University. My main current interest is the history of England in the early modern period, particularly outside London: local law enforcement, how people were fed, what they read and popular culture. My research at present is concentrated on the place name Beggars Bush, which has involved much research into theatre, (not Shakespeare), and badgers, (see article). I am working fairly systematically through entries for English writers in the early modern period, on which Wikipedia is presently weak, with most of the entries basically from the 1911 Britannica. Thanks for the encouraging note about Caxton Gibbet. In England we don't often have disagreements with people with guns!

  1. I think there is a bug in Wiki that causes it to log us out after a while. The solution is just to log back on and ignore it, unless it happens a lot in a short time, then go ask about that at Wikipedia:Help desk.
  2. With thousands of people here from all over a real world that has wars and hatred and all sorts of conflicts, I think it is a major miracle that we all get along together so well. Perhaps the real world can learn a lesson from us. Anyhow, it is pretty difficult to do a lot of cosntructive work without stepping on someone else's toes, so sooner or later one of those people, who imagines you have stepped on their toes, will complain to the sysops. The important thing is for you to see this happening, and mount a strong defense. There is a process for resolving this. User:AlMac|(talk) 09:24, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stlom

Hello, this is Stlom. I'm 22 years old and live in Olympia, Washington, USA.

I've been relying on Wikipedia as a source of information for a while now, and am appreciative of the generally high level of quality for most articles. Despite making a few minor edits on various articles, I had never really considered creating an account of my own. However, that changed when I noticed there was no article about Judith Ortiz Cofer, which surprised me since she is fairly popular and renowned. So I took it upon myself to create one. I'm hoping other Wikipedians will expand and improve it, as it is pretty basic. Stlom 20:37, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also a goon. (lol stairs lol)

Hi everyone. I'm a long time listener first time caller (I've always wanted to say that). I joined Wikipedia back on October 29 2005 (the day I made my first edit, altered some poor grammer). I started off making little spelling and grammer edits, but I've branched out into activly editing article content and partaking in disscussion.

I'm a 17 year old student of Katikati College in New Zealand, I intend to head off to Massey University once I've finished College to do a Bachelor of Applied Science in Horticulture, I'll probally stay for the masters.

My interests include; General History from early man to the 19th century; Military History from 2000BC until the end of WW2 in 1945. In science my interests are mainly in biology (both flora and fauna).

Sorry if this introduction seams fragmented, it's much harder to say something about your self than it is to discuss the pharmaceutical benifits of White's Tree Frog -- Faded_Mantis 07:34, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've used Wikipedia a lot, for some legitimate research, but also in random reading - I enjoy learning new things that I might not have learned otherwise. In my lookings, I've seen a lot of typos, misspellings, and bad grammer, and I do think it reflects poorly. I used to just think, "someone ought to change that", then I started changing it, now I signed up so my changes can be tracked. I try not to significantly edit content, really, as most of the articles I edit are about subjects which I know nothing about.

S.Neelakantan - My first post.

I am a retired Professor of economics, now living in a relatively isolated hamlet in Tamilnadu State in India. Internet connection to my hamlet is erratic and slow. Still I am able to visit Wikipedia often, generally around midnight!I have fairly adequate language skills in English, and my services are available for any useful editing work. I am yet to learn editing wiki pages, and I have begun the tutorial lessons now. I hope to master the skills soon. Neelakantan 18:09, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You might want to visit the Category:Indian Wikipedians, follow the instructions to categorize yourself with your fellow countrymen and women on Wikipedia (this is totally optional of course), and visit Wikipedia:Notice board for India-related topics to see if there are Wikipedia articles in need of contributions, where your particular know-how would be a boon. As newcomers state their general interests here, some of us also post tip and suggestions on your talk page. Welcome to Wikipedia. User:AlMac|(talk) 00:47, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I've been using Wikipedia as a reference for a couple of years now, ever since Google started returning Wikipedia entries as the top results for my searches.

A couple of days ago I came here to find information on the role-playing game De Profundis and discovered that no such article existed - the first time I can remember Wikipedia having a blind spot about a topic in which I was interested. I decided I was just going to have to use the sources I already had and write the article myself.

I've put up a project proposal for the creation of a series of articles about De Profundis and its sister games, Hogshead Publishing's legendary New Style line of games. I look forward to collaborating with everyone who's interested.

Dropping in just on the off chance that there are things that I know about that somehow aren't fully recorded and discussed here. I'm interested in new religious movements, esoteric christianity, communication theory, hoaxes, baking, genre fiction, psychology (especially gestalt and subjectivism), hypnotherapy, linguistics, and a host of other stuff. I figure that if nothing else, I'm a good hand with the proofreading, and I'm not a bad researcher, so that might be helpful.

permanent link ?

Hi,

I've just recently began using Wikipedia, and I was wondering if there's a way to save a collection of topics that you would like to revisit. The watchlist allows one to view any ongoing changes, but it's not convenient as a collection of bookmarks. I thought it would just be nice if there was a sidebox (such as "toolbox") for your collection of favorite topics. I tried the "permanent link", but I didn't see it do much. Anyway if you have any idea as how I go about doing this it would be greatly appreciated. I guess one option is just to save it to my bookmarks, or del.icio.us collection. But I thought it would be nicer to have it all in one place. Thanks.

racking the brain on a song...

Very impressed, finally a radio station that plays EVERYTHING! My boyfriend(musician)was listening a few weeks ago and heard a song that he wanted to download but didn't catch the title or artist of the song. He comes to me(one who can't remember a song that just player five minutes ago)sings the first few line of the song: "Love of my life, how can I go on..." the way he sang it, to me sounded like Scorpions but he assured me it wasn't. Mentioned it was an older song maybe from 60's 70's. I have two other people searching the net and racking our brains. Please help us! Oh yah and I forgot the Chorus may go like so: "I've been waiting for someone like you..."

Please help find the song we are looking for,

I don't understand something. I am a long time experienced bdsm lifestyler and I have a free website with knowledge and safety articles. Within this website are links to affiliate websites and adult content providers but they are not what my website is at all about. In the past I have edited many articles pertaining to bdsm, bondage, gorean lifestyle, and the likes. Typically I also add my website as a external source for bdsm community discussions.

The thing I don't understand is that some of the wikipedia pages allow my website link to stay up (and have for a LONG time running) others delete my link. At first I assumed someone just re-edited those pages and removed my link, but today I recieved a message telling me not to post commercial sites. My site is not commercial in any way with an exception of showing "advertisements" (however the good standing website of tes is a not for profit commercial site and listed on nearly every wikipedia bdsm page). I sell nothing on my site which would make it commercial. I think it is a good resource for certain topics and therefore I add it. Should I just not add external resources? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.186.114.150 (talkcontribs)

You added it to every BSDM-related article, which looked like a spambot. I'm sorry for being so harsh, but adding to just *one* article would have been better. Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 10:57, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

My real name is Paul Montroy. I am currently 17, living the most boring existance in Hubbardsville, NY. I owe a debt of gratitude to this website, for I now have a semi-reliable source of knowledge that will hopefully give me something to do with the vast amounts of time I have to kill. I also look forward to using this place at Paul Smith's college where I am bound by early decision to go.

Well....I'm new here. Been using wikipedia as a source for bits of info for a while. Searched for something tonight that I know a bit about and found nothing on it so I thought I might join in and add something.

I'm Canadian, live on the west coast of Canada on an island. I'm 60 years old, an artist, craftsperson and traveller. I've made a few web pages. Now I'll contribute something here and see how that goes.

Jaffer

Hello fellow editors:

My name is Jaffer and I am a newbie to editing. My specialty is in historical videos and historical footage where I have been involved for over 20 years. I am 50 years old and discovered Wikipedia about 9 months ago and became hooked as a reader.

I started editing a few days ago by adding video clips that are legal to articles. I have been using a site owned by my family called evtv1.com. My family also happens to own British Pathe film library, but much of it is not yet available for online viewing. When it is, I will be adding links to that as well.

Adding links to video is tricky because you need to know if the rights allow for such linking. That is why I have stayed with evtv1.com links because I know the rights disposition. Anyway, I think Wikipedia is the single greatest resource on the web. My goal is to link video to over 5000 articles by years end...that is if the Admins allow. I have been accused of SPAMMING three times in a few days. Jaffer 06:50, 15 January 2006 (UTC) Jaffer[reply]

Hi everyone. Recently signed up to edit, but been using Wikipedia for a couple of years or so. I live to the north of London. Special interests are railways (I've worked in the industry for 20 years), geography and music. I've accumulated lots of useless knowledge over the years - hope I can put it all to good use on here! All the best. Rushey Platt 20:32, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As my username implies I am rather fond of literature, I have always enjoyed reading encyclopedias and dictionaries and thought it would be interesting to contribute to one. My primary areas of interest and expertise are as follows 1. Fantasy and a few science fiction universes 2. science, primarily areas having to do with experimental physics or biochemistry 3. A bit of psycology (primarily the effects of trauma on the psyche) Joshbooks 20:52, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi everybody. My name is Joel, and I am new to all this. I heard about Wikipedia on National Public Radio, and I was impressed to hear about the Nature article that referred to a similar error rate as the Encyclopedia Brittanica.

I am a 33 year old small animal veterinarian, so that is where my initial edits and article creation will be. I have been in practice for almost nine years. Hopefully, I can expand the current articles and add new ones of interest to dog and cat owners.

Please let me know if there is anything I can add to Wikipedia that is of interest to you. Also, tell me if I am doing anything wrong. Like I said, I am new to all of this. -- Joelmills 21:12, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, I believe Wikipedia is KING! Go Wikipedia! Feel free to visit my user page (which isn't all that spectacular yet.)

I'm new as of today as a contributor to Wikipedia, but I have been using it's resources for nearly 2 years. Greetings, wiki bretheren. I'm an MIT Ph.D. with penchant for computing and electronics, and spent more than a few years at the Media Lab. I've run a wiki of my own for the last six years, based on Ward Cunningham's original Perl code, now hacked beyond recognition. I spent way too many years in higher education (10 years in grad school alone) and hope to make modest contributions here in some of the areas I've studied, including:

  • Wearable computing and related topics,
  • Cognitive and perceptual factors in human-computer interaction,
  • Hardware and software engineering,
  • Theoretical computer science, espepcially as it intersects with physics and philosophy,
  • and experimental design, probability and descriptive/generative statistics.

... more on my personal page, once I get it set up. Cheers! DoctorHeadcrash 07:06, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

My name is Samuel Saltman. I'm a 23 year old recent college graduate from New Jersey. I found out about Wikipedia only a year ago and, because I get into so many heated arguments with friends about historical and political issues, I began using Wikipedia as one of my many sources to prove myself right! (I always seem to win those debates, hmmmmm...) I have to admit that I am a little reluctant to read all the policy and "how to" stuff. I love reading literature, politics and history, but I HATE reading technical and legal/policy-style jargon.

I'm really interested in the Middle-East, particularly Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and the "war on terrorism," although I am interested in anything related to international politics.

I also speak Portuguese - being the son of a Brazilian woman - and I am very impressed by the fact that I found a plethora of articles about Brazilian soccer teams. I am definitely going to get my hands on editing that.

One last thing. I'm an English instructor at a learning center (I was an English major in college) so I guess you can call me a stickler for grammar (although I'm sure I've made tons of mistakes in this comment already). I've notcied that you guys put punctuation such as periods and commas outside of quotation marks. For example, "This is what the guy said". That is definitely not correct. Here's a link that shows what I'm talking about:

http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/quotes.asp

Instead of reading it all, just read the first rule, which I have pasted below...

Rule 1. Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks, even inside single quotes.

Examples:

The sign changed from "Walk," to "Don't Walk," to "Walk" again within 30 seconds.

She said, "Hurry up."

She said, "He said, 'Hurry up.'"

For quite some time I was doing gardening work in the science pages, in the french as well as in the english pages of Wikipedia. Maybe I should switch gears and write a full "paper" on some topic. I'm 48, work as a scientist in a Natl Lab, and I have some expertise in condensed matter physics, rock climbing and photography. Lets us try all together to improve this great Wikipedia project !

what type of ppl...

what type of people writhe the articles. are they college students, doctors (as in Ph.D) really smart people?

By the way, I think I discovered Wikipedia while looking for information on Google. Later on, I heard of it and started using it regularly. In Christmas, I even read an article from a Spanish magazine explaining how Wikipedia works. Thank you, --Javichu 22:55, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Don Benjamin on cancer

My name is Don Benjamin. I live in Sydney. I am a retired electrical engineer/experimental scientist. I worked for Australia's national science organisation, CSIRO, for 35 years. During this period I published two scientific papers.

My second interest is as a Health, Safety and Environment Consultant, for which I have Masters Degree in Engineering Science. I am currently employed on a contract to Local Government.

My third interest is in cancer. Twenty-five years ago I helped to found a charity called the Cancer Information & Support Society in Sydney. As a scientist I was asked to evaluate alternative cancer therapies. To do this I had to compare their results with those of orthodox therapies. When I tried to evaluate orthodox therapies I got a surprise. Surgery had never been evaluated in a randomised trial; radiotherapy had not been shown to extend survival; and chemotherapy extended survival in only about 3% of cancers. I published my findings on cancer surgery in 1993. When it was claimed that mammograms saved lives by enabling earlier surgical intervention I evaluated mammograms and found they did not extend survival. I published my findings in 1996. My findings were confirmed in 2001 by the Nordic Cochrane Group in Denmark. Since then the limitations of orthodox cancer therapies have been confirmed by many international medical researchers. I list them as references in a recent submission I wrote to the Australian Senate Inquiry into services and treatment options for person with cancer on behalf of the cancer charity. See See submission No. 15 at http://www.aph.gov.au/senate/committee/clac_ctte/cancer/submissions/sublist.htm

In January 2005 I found that Wikipedia did not reflect the severe limitations of orthodox cancer therapies, but rather included only the viewpoints of those who don't accept the findings of evidence based medicine. I tried to balance this situation by pointing out the lack of evidence for most orthodox cancer interventions and some better results from using an alternative cancer paradigm. This attempt has so far been blocked.

Thank You for free information.

WRAY

Checking in to Wikipedia. My interests are in religious studies. I came onto this encyclopedia by searching phrases from a book I am currently reading, "A History of God" by Karen Armstrong.

I am retired for marketing for a small community hospital. I recently completed work to receive a masters of divinity degree and currently serve as a volunteer chaplain at a long-term care facility. I am an adjunct instructor for the university where I graduated, teaching one of the core religion courses required for the bachelors degree.

Most of my research and use of this vehicle will be in the area of religion or related areas, expecially of the Christian nature.
