In 1958, Marie Jahoda devised a list of characteristics which are present in the majority of people who are regarded as normal.

Characteristics of ideal mental health:

  • Efficient self perception
  • Realistic self esteem and acceptance
  • Voluntary control of behaviour
  • True perception of the world
  • Sustaining relationships and giving affection
  • Self direction and productivity
