If you review the scene again, there's some discloration of both teams' Italian flags, probably due to the glare from the snow. However, immediately after the "proctor" announceds that the Hippies have the correct order, the camera shot was taken from a different angle and you can see BJ run into the Italian flag, which is distinctively green, white, and red.
