Artsper is a digital platform for buying art online. It connects galleries with collectors and art lovers to facilitate the discovery and acquisition of contemporary artworks. The platform is operated by the company Mumart.[2]
History
[edit]Artsper was founded in 2012 by Hugo Mulliez, after completing an internship at the investment fund General Atlantic. The name "Artsper" is a tribute to the American painter Jasper Johns.[3]
He was later joined by fellow EDHEC alumnus François-Xavier Trancart. The website launched in March 2013 with 25 partner galleries and 250 artworks.[4]
In 2014, Sébastien Tétard joined as the first employee and became CTO. By 2018, the site had over 400,000 unique monthly visitors.
As of 2020, Artsper employed 30 people and partnered with more than 1,500 galleries, representing 10,000 artists and 130,000 artworks. Notable artists on the platform include Banksy, Helmut Newton, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Jeff Koons, as well as emerging talents, especially from the street art scene. The platform offers artworks at a range of prices.[5]
Products and Business Model
[edit]Artsper operates through two main components:
- A digital marketplace that allows users to browse and purchase artworks.
- A back-office interface for galleries to manage their profiles, upload artworks, and artists. Galleries pay a subscription and a commission of 10–20% on sales.[6]
Artsper also produces its own cultural content, including the Artsper Magazine, which features articles and interviews related to the art world.[7]
Fundraising
[edit]Since its launch, Artsper has raised nearly €4.5 million from private and institutional investors. Notable investors include Guillaume Cerutti, CEO of Christie's, and Frédéric Jousset, owner of Beaux Arts Magazine.[8][9][10][11]
