"Assumptions" is a song by Sam Gellaitry that was originally produced in 2019, but only released in 2021 on the IV EP. The song had a resurgence in popularity in 2025 thanks to its use for a viral video featuring Russian dancer Ruslan Aidaev, also known as "Blue Shirt Guy".[1][2] The song peaked at number 5 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart in Billboard. The song was also featured as part of the pre-intro of Apple's WWDC 2025, held on June 9, 2025.[3]

In an interview with Billboard, Gallantry stated that it was "six takes of breathy and high-register shit."[4] In 2021, American producer Yung Bae featured the song in his mix on Triple J.[5] In 2023, producer Kaytranada remixed "Assumptions".[6] Gellaitry described Kaytranada as "a true innovator and inspiration to my music".[7]

Lyrics meaning

[edit]

The song "Assumptions" by Sam Gellaitry explores the theme of uncertainty and doubt in a romantic relationship. The lyrics predominantly revolve around the singer questioning whether their assumption about their partner's feelings is correct. In the verses and instrumental breaks, the singer expresses their willingness to give their all if their partner desires love. However, they constantly question whether their assumption about their partner's desires and emotions is accurate. They seek validation, asking if their partner feels the same way.

The repetition of the lyrics further emphasizes the singer's uncertainty and vulnerability. They long for confirmation and reassurance, hoping for their partner's emotions to match their own. The absence of specific details about the relationship leaves room for interpretation, allowing listeners to relate to the feelings of uncertainty and doubt that can arise in any romantic situation.

Overall, "Assumptions" delves into the insecurities and anxieties that can emerge when trying to discern the true nature of a romantic connection, highlighting the importance of open communication and emotional clarity in relationships.
