Atul Limited is an Indian chemical manufacturing company headquartered in Atul, Gujarat and is listed on both stock exchanges of India. Founded on 5 September 1947 by industrialist Kasturbhai Lalbhai, it was one of the first private‐sector enterprises established in post‐independence India and is part of the Lalbhai Group. It serves over 4,000 customers across more than 30 industries in 90 countries through wholly owned subsidiaries in the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, China, and Brazil.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][excessive citations]

Atul has diversified itself into a chemical conglomerate from a small company making a few textile dyes into a chemical conglomerate manufacturing 900 products and 400 formulations to 4,000 customers belonging to 30 diverse industries in the process making India self-reliant in manufacturing of several chemicals.[12] The Company has established 41 operating subsidiary, a joint venture and associate entities over the seven decades.[12][13][1]

Atul is the largest producer of para Cresol, para-anisic, aldehyde and para-anisic alcohol in the world with almost 55% of total global capacity at a single location.[14]

Atul also manufactures many pharmaceuticals and drugs and it is the first company in India to manufacture Dapsone.[15]

In 2024 Atul village developed by Atul and with help of its Atul Foundation got the Platinum Green Village certification.[16]

History

Atul was incorporated on 5 September 1947 by Kasturbhai Lalbhai. The manufacturing plant at Atul village inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1952.[3] Early international partnerships included American Cyanamid (1952) to form Cyanamid India Ltd for industrial chemicals and Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1955 to create Atic Industries Ltd for textile dyes. In 1960, a joint venture with Ciba-Geigy resulted in the creation of Cibatul Ltd for manufacturing epoxy resins.[17][full citation needed][18]

Key expansions:

  • 1967: Entry into agrochemicals with phenoxy herbicides
  • 1985: Acquisition of Piramal Rasayan Ltd (renamed Amal Ltd)[19]
  • 1997: Founded Atul Bioscience Ltd for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates
  • 2011: Acquired DPD Ltd (UK) and formed joint venture with Rudolf GmbH (Germany)[20]
  • 2012 -Atul's Ankleshwar unit started world’s biggest Para cresol manufacturing plant of Atul which was inagurated by Narendra Modi, who was then Chief Minister of Gujarat[21]
  • 2013: Atul acquiered adhesive brand Polygrip[22]
  • 2016:Dutch specialty chemicals major AkzoNobel and Atul Ltd, a Lalbhai Group company signed an agreement to set up a manufacturing joint venture for the production of monochloro acetic acid (MCA) in India.[23]
  • 2017: Joint venture with Nouryon (Netherlands) to produce monochloroacetic acid[24]
  • 2022: Atul is one of the leading producers of sulphur black in the world. In 2022 it completed the expansion of its sulphur black manufacturing facility from 9,800 tonnes to 26000 tonnes per annum.[25]
  • 2024: In January 2024 Atul commissioned 1035 crore caustic-chlorine plant at its main plant in Atul village In October 2024 Atul completed the expansion of its liquid epoxy resin at its facility. After expansion the total capacity to manufacture is now 80,000 tons per annum.[26]
  • 2024 : Atul introduced a new patented herbicide to control post-emergence weeds, marking its dominance in the retail crop-protection market of India[27]
  • 2025 Atul Healthcare, which had acquired controlling stake in Valsad Institute of Medical Sciences Ltd in 2022 started its modern multi-specialty and super specialty NABH compliant 200 bed hospital in Valsad district at Pardi. The hospital was inaugurated by incumbent Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendrabhai Patel in February 2025.[28][29]
