Cimorelli (sim-or-ELL-ee) is a singing group made famous on YouTube and signed to Universal Music's Island label. Called, by Sacramento Magazine, "the best family performing group since The Jackson 5,"[1] Cimorelli is made up of 6 sisters, Christina (34), Katherine (33), Lisa (31), Amy (29), Lauren (26), and Dani (25). The group has become a regular on the Billboard Social 50, charting 20 times since summer 2011 while reaching a high of #27 in December of that year.[2] In September 2011, they received The Jackson 5 Award for Family Music at the Fourth Annual Malibu Music Awards.[3] Currently, Cimorelli is writing and recording their debut album, collaborating with Grammy award-winning producers and songwriters including The-Dream and Liz Rose.[4] As of December 2011, Cimorelli has over 122 million video views and 455,000 subscribers on YouTube.[5]
Early life
Raised along with their five brothers in Sacramento, CA, each of the sisters was introduced to music between the ages of two and four by their mother, Lynne — a college music major, composer, and former choir director who taught the girls classical piano, three-part barbershop harmonizing, and vocal jazz. In 2002, Christina, Katherine, and Lisa began to perform locally and recruited Amy, Lauren, and Dani as they became old enough to join the group. The girls did musical theater, appearing in several productions while immersing themselves in dance, acting, and instrument lessons. (Christina and Lauren play keyboards, Amy plays rhythm guitar, Katherine plays bass, Lisa plays the drums, and Dani plays the bongos.) All children are or were homeschooled by their mother.
Career
In 2007, the oldest five girls launched Cimorelli as a vocal group. They released a self-titled album in December 2008. After posting a cover of Miley Cyrus' Party in the USA in 2009, Cimorelli was discovered by a 13 year-old girl in London whose mother happened to be the manager of a then little known artist named Jessie J. Sarah Stennett, who also manages British pop super-group the Sugababes, agreed to manage Cimorelli and helped them to sign a record deal with Universal in April 2010.[6] The entire family of 11 children moved to Southern California so the girls could pursue their music career.[7] Cimorelli released an Island Records debut EP in December 2011. The EP features 4 cover songs (Skyscraper by Demi Lovato, Dynamite by Taio Cruz, Price Tag by Jessie J, and What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction), a Christmas cover (All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey), and an original single (Million Bucks). The single was written by Cimorelli and produced by 3x Grammy-winner Neff-U. Relying exclusively on social media for publicity, the CimFam EP reached #6 on iTunes popchart in the US within 12 hours of release. It also reached iTunes pop chart performances as high as Canada (#5), New Zealand (#9), Mexico (#10), Australia (#15), Germany (#21) and The Netherlands (#22).
