Abdel Azim Hammad ( born 1950) is an Egyptian journalist and editor. He has held several prominent editorial positions and is known for his political commentary and significant contributions to the Egyptian press. Over the course of a career spanning five decades, Hammad has held senior editorial roles in major Egyptian newspapers, most notably serving as Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram, one of the oldest and most influential publications in Arab world. He has also contributed to independent media platforms and has authored several books on political thought and media ethics, published by leading Egyptian publishing houses. Hammad is recognized for his independent editorial stance and his engagement with contemporary political developments in Egypt and Middle East. [1] [2]
Early life and education
[edit]Hammad was born in Egypt in 1950. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Cairo University. [1]
Career
[edit]Hammad began his career in journalism in 1973, working as a political editor and commentator for Egyptian radio and television, October Magazine, and the daily newspaper Al-Ahram.
He later became:
- Director of Al-Ahram International in Europe
- Chief Correspondent for Al-Ahram in Central Europe
- Managing Editor of Al-Shorouk
- Managing Editor and eventually Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram
On 30 March 2011, he was officially appointed Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram. This followed an internal vote by Al-Ahram journalists held on 10 March 2011, where he received 130 out of 255 votes. Other candidates included Farouk Gouida (92 votes) and Yehia Ghanem (40 votes).[1] [2] [3]

[edit]Hammad has authored multiple research papers, political studies, and articles. He has also translated two books and participated in international forums discussing Middle Eastern and global affairs.[4] [5] [6] [7]
Notability and Public Influence
[edit]Hammad have been a consistent voice in Egyptian political discourse. His role as Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram came at a time of political transformation following the Jan 2011 revolution. He was elected to this position by Al-Ahram journalists, a rare occurrence in Egyptian media history. He continues to publish commentary on independent platforms such as Mada Masr and Masr360, where his articles often attract wide readership and social media engagement.[3][8] Unlike many of his predecessors , Hammad has been noted for his independent editorial stance, especially during politically sensitive periods. In addition to his journalism , Hammad has authored several political and media studies published by leading Egyptian publishers such as Dar El Shorouk. His books includes The Lost Revolution and The Phoenix Under Ashes, both of which analyze the socio-political dynamics in Egypt and the Arab world.[9][4]
