Avkrvst (stylised in all caps, and pronounced "Awkrust") is a Norwegian progressive rock band formed in 2022. The band consists of founding members Simon Bergseth (vocals, guitars, bass) and Martin Utby (drums, synthesizers), along with Øystein Aadland (bass, keyboards), Edvard Seim (guitars), and Auver Gaaren (keyboards).
History
[edit]Avkrvst was founded by Martin Utby and Simon Bergseth, two childhood friends who made a pact at the age of seven to form a band together.[1] Despite playing in various other bands throughout their lives, the two musicians did not collaborate until 22 years later, finally fulfilling their childhood promise.[2]
In December 2022, the band announced their signing to InsideOut Music/Sony Music.[3][4] "Signing with InsideOutMusic is a childhood dream come true," the band stated at the time.[5]
Musical style and influences
[edit]The band's music draws inspiration from progressive rock acts including Mew, Anekdoten, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Neal Morse, and King Crimson.[2][6] Critics have noted strong influences from Opeth and Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree in their sound, which combines melodic progressive rock with heavier, metal-influenced passages.[7][2][8] The band is categorized as Heavy Prog on Progarchives.[2]

The Approbation (2023)
[edit]The band's debut album The Approbation was released on June 16, 2023, through InsideOut Music.[6][9] The album is a 49-minute concept piece about "a bleak soul who is left solely with his thoughts, isolated in a cabin deep in the dark forests, far away from civilization," exploring themes of isolation and acceptance of death.[6] The album was written and recorded at a small cabin in the Norwegian forest of Alvdal.[2][6]
Track listing:
- "Østerdalen"
- "The Pale Moon"
- "Isolation"
- "The Great White River"
- "Arcane Clouds"

The album received positive reviews, with The Prog Report calling it "49 minutes of sonic glory."[10]
Waving at the Sky (2025)
[edit]The band's second album Waving at the Sky was released on June 13, 2025, continuing their partnership with InsideOut Music.[11][12][13] The album serves as a prequel to The Approbation, with the lonely man from the first album appearing as "the step dad" character.[14][15][16] The album's narrative was inspired by "a shocking and horrifying case that shook rural Norway more than ten years ago."[17]
The album features Haken's Ross Jennings as a guest vocalist on the track "The Malevolent."[18][19]
Track listing:
