Bijaraniya is a surname of the Jat people found in the Indian states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi , Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. They are considered to be branch of Tomars.[1] The Bijaraniya (also spelled Bijarnia, Bijaranya,Vijaraniya or Vijayrania) is a distinguished Jat clan with a rich history spanning from ancient times to the modern era.
Ancient history
[edit]The name "Bijaraniya" is said to derive from "Vijayrania" (meaning victorious), awarded to their ancestors for bravery in war.[2]Greek historians with Alexander in 326 BCE referred to the “Varetatae” tribe, believed by some to be ancestors of the Bijaraniyas.[3]The clan is believed to be descended from sage Vishwamitra and associated with Tomar Jats and possibly the Pandavas.[2]
Medieval history
[edit]In 1078 CE, Vijay Singh Ranaiya (a prominent ancestor) founded the village of Bijarna Khera.[1]In 1178 CE, Bijaraniya rulers constructed a fort in Ladhana (Rajasthan).[1]The Bijaraniyas resisted invasions from the Delhi Sultanate during Iltutmish’s reign (1211–1236 CE).[2]In 1255 CE, Jagsingh Bijarniya established a state in Palsana, Sikar district.[4]By 1515 CE, Dev Raj Bijarniya ruled areas of Rajasthan and clashed with Shekhawat and Kachwaha Rajputs.[3]
