Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) is a technology company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company develops software and analytics tools for monitoring driving behavior and improving road safety.[1][2][3][4] It was founded in 2010 by Hari Balakrishnan,[5][6] Samuel Madden, and William Powers,[7][8][9][10] as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.[11][12][13]

Overview

[edit]

CMT’s core product is the DriveWell Fusion Platform, which aggregates data from smartphones, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, connected vehicles, and third-party sources.[14] Using algorithms and machine learning, the platform analyzes factors such as speed, acceleration, phone use, and collisions. It can also detect crashes and alert emergency responders.[11][15]

In 2018, CMT received an investment of $500 million from the SoftBank Vision Fund.[16][17][18][19][20][21]

CMT partners with insurers, fleet operators, automakers, gig-economy services, and public agencies. In North America, its insurance partners include auto insurers, such as State Farm,[22] Progressive,[23] USAA,[24] Liberty Mutual, Farmers Insurance Group, and Nationwide Financial Services.[25][26] International partners include Intact and Desjardins[27][28] in Canada; HUK-COBURG[29] in Germany; Admiral,[30] Hastings,[31] and First Central[32] in the UK; Discovery Insure[33] in South Africa; and Aioi in Japan.[34]

CMT has also partnered with Hyundai,[35] Verizon,[36] and ADT[37] on crash detection services, and with AARP,[38] DoorDash,[39] and Uber[40] to support driver safety programs. The company has worked with the Ohio Traffic Safety Office to evaluate the impact of hands-free driving laws.[41]

In 2021, CMT acquired the U.S.-based telematics company TrueMotion[42][24] In 2023, it acquired Amodo, a European telematics firm.[43][18][44][45][26]

CMT holds patents related to crash detection, driver-device interaction monitoring, and classification of driving behavior.[46][47]

Products and services

[edit]

DriveWell Fusion Platform

[edit]

The DriveWell Fusion Platform integrates mobile software, connected vehicle data, and proprietary IoT devices such as the DriveWell Tag and dash cams. It is used by insurers, commercial fleets, vehicle manufacturers, and public agencies.

DriveWell Product Suites

[edit]
  • DriveWell Risk – Assesses driver risk based on behavioral analytics and actuarial models.[48][49]
  • DriveWell Engage – Provides driver feedback and coaching aimed at reducing risk and improving engagement.[50]
  • DriveWell Crash & Claims – Detects crashes in real time and supports emergency response and claims processing.[51][52]

Mobile Applications

[edit]

CMT offers a white-label software development kit (SDK) and customizable mobile app for telematics deployment.

The company’s Safest Driver program uses mobile telematics to identify and reduce risky driving behavior.[53] It has been recognized by the Federal Highway Administration as supporting Vision Zero objectives.[54][55][56]

Openroad is a direct-to-consumer mobile app that detects crashes and offers emergency services at the scene.

Research and collaboration

[edit]

CMT contributes to road safety research through academic and public-sector collaborations, working with Stanford University,[57] the University of Pennsylvania, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS),[58] and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).[59]

In 2022, CMT released findings showing that households with both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles shifted toward more electric vehicle usage during periods of high fuel prices.[60][61][62] Another study examined driving behavior among users of telematics programs, showing a reduction in distracted driving, hard braking, and speeding, along with a corresponding decrease in insurance claims.[61][62]

Awards and accolades

[edit]
  • 2023 Marconi Prize – awarded to co-founder Hari Balakrishnan[63]
  • EY Entrepreneur of the Year (2021) – Bill Powers and Hari Balakrishnan[64]
  • Named among CB Insights’ Top 50 Insurtech Firms and as a “Leader” in auto telematics[65][66]
  • 2023 AutoTech Breakthrough Award, Vehicle Telematics Company of the Year
