D.V. Chernov[1][2] (born May 21, 1974) is a Russian-born American author. His books include historical fiction and crime fiction novels.
His debut novel Commissar (Troubador 2021) was named Finalist in the 2022 Hemingway Historical Fiction division of the Chanticleer International Book Awards.[3]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Chernov was born on May 21, 1974, in Omsk, a city in Russia, then part of the Soviet Union. When he was 9, his family moved to the mountains of the Northern Caucasus, where his parents worked at the astrophysics observatory of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.[2]
In 1991, shortly after the Soviet coup attempt in Moscow, Chernov came to study in the US as part of the People to People student exchange program.[2] He studied at Liberty High School and Truman State University from which he received BA and MA in English degrees.[4]
Chernov became a US citizen in 2002.[2]
Career
[edit]After receiving his MA degree, Chernov taught at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, and later at the Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.[2]
In 2003, Chernov transitioned to working in the high-tech field and had worked at companies such as Cerner and Hyland Software before beginning his writing career.[4]
His debut historical fiction novel Commissar: A Novel of Civil War Russia was published by Troubador in 2021[5] and was awarded Finalist recognition in the Hemingway Awards Division of the Chanticleer International Book Awards.[3]
In 2022 Chernov launched a detective fiction series Nick Severs Mysteries with book 1 Severed Echoes (Heathen Press) followed by book 2 Cold Trace (Heathen Press 2024).[6] In interviews, Chernov indicated that his mystery and suspense novels are influenced by his career in the high-tech industry and incorporate topics such as cybercrime, artificial intelligence, digital privacy and digital surveillance.[2][4]

Critical Reception
[edit]Chernov's works have received favorable reviews from book reviewers.[7][8][9][10] His books have been praised for masterful plotting,[8] psychological suspense,[11] and compelling character development.[11][12] Kirkus Reviews gave Severed Echoes the Get It! Verdict award, praising it as a "solid mystery."[12] The Midwest Book Review commended Chernov's "genuine flair for the kind of narrative driven storytelling style that keeps the reader fully engaged from start to finish."[8] The Prairies Book Review indicated that in his Nick Severs Mysteries, "the narrative moves at an irresistible pace, drawing readers in with its masterful plotting."[11] Chanticleer Book Reviews praised Chernov's Commissar, noting that "masterful blending of fictional with non-fictional characters and events creates a blockbuster read."[9]
Chernov's novels have also been commended for broaching sensitive topics like crimes against women and child trafficking. BookViral noted that "Chernov is prepared to go where the majority of authors would shy away from to give us a focused piece of storytelling with a powerful sense of empathy."[7] The Prairies Book Review observed that his focus on difficult themes "adds depth to the story without being heavy-handed."[11]
