David Evans Shaw (born April 22, 1944) is an American technology and social entrepreneur, venture capitalist, investor, author, film producer, philanthropist and conservationist who has also served on numerous boards of companies and government and non-governmental organizations, including serving as treasurer, treasurer emeritus, trustee emeritus and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).[1][2] In business, he is principally known as the founder and co-founder of several veterinarian science related companies including IDEXX laboratories, Vets First Choice,[3] COVETRUS [4] and founder and CEO of Black Point Group. [5]
Early Life and Education

David Evans Shaw was born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1951, [6] He is the son of Frederic E. Shaw and Muriel Evans Shaw and spent much of his early life in New Hampshire.[4]
EDUCATION
Shaw attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts from the School of Arts and Sciences [7] He earned his MBA from the University of Maine in 1976. [8] He graduated from Harvard University’s Senior Executive Program in 1986.[6]
Career
[edit]Shaw has founded, co-founded or served on the boards of numerous companies, including IDEXX Laboratories (founder, CEO),[3] Ikaria Pharmaceuticals (founding CEO, Chair), Covetrus (co-founder, Chair), Cyteir, Modern Meadow, Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Itaconix, Ovation, Venrock Associates, New Mountain Capital, Leerink Partners, Polaris Venture Partners, Fetchdog.com, co-founded with then wife Glenn Close and others. Conservation Activities
[edit]Shaw was a founding chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance [10] and Aspen High Seas Initiative,[11] and is a member of Ocean Elders.[1][11] Shaw was is a Patron of Nature to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature,[12] and founder of Second Century Stewardship for America’s national parks. [13]
He has served as a board member or advisor to the MIT Media Lab, National Geographic Society Impact Story Lab,[14] Maine Medical Center,[5] Hurricane Island Outward Bound,[15] Discovery Communications and Curiosity Stream,[9] Nautilus Magazine [16], Waterbear Media [17], Just Capital, [18]Arctaris, [19] , Leerlink [20], Sustainable Harvest International, [21]the Telluride Science and Research Center, [22]Nautilus Media,[16] Saildrone,[1], the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance,[23]the Service Year Alliance, the Pell Center Nationhood Lab, [24] Visby Medical, [25] and the The Future of Cities.[26]
Public and Academic Service
[edit]From 1990 to 1991 Shaw served on the Congressional Advisory Committee on Biotechnology.[27]
Shaw was presidential appointee to the National Parks Foundation overseeing the centennial celebrations of the Parks in 2016 and serves on the US National Parks Foundation Board of Trustees from 2012 to the present.[1][28] He served as treasurer of the AAAS between 2010 and 2017, and continues to serve as a treasure emeritus, trustee and Fellow of the organization.[28]
He was a Presidential appointment to the Executive Committee of the US-Israel Science and Technology Commission by President Bill Clinton and served in this capacity from 1994-1997.[29]
Shaw has served on the Governing Board of the Jackson Laboratory since 1989 and has served as Chairman of the Board since 1997. [5]
He served on the Center for Public Leadership, Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government Advisory Board between 2003 – 2012.[30]
In 2019 Shaw was elected to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum Board of Directors.[30]
He has taught at the tertiary level and given guest lectures at MIT Sloan School of Management, Dartmouth Tuck School of Management, Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Stanford School of Business, Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, University of Maine, Colby Collegeand Bowdoin College among others.[2][13][15][27][30]
Honorary Degrees
[edit]Shaw has been awarded five honorary doctorates - Colby College (2012) Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa, Bates College (2014) Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters [31], Maine College of Art, the University of New England, and the University of Southern Maine (2015) Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.[32]
Public Health Issues
[edit]In 2022 Shaw worked with actor Goldie Hawn to provide curriculum and training for teachers to assist students in Maine schools to combat mental health issues including depression.[33]
Film and Books
[edit]His works include producing and writing films and documentaries[34] These include documentaries on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Second Century Stewardship Science beyond the Scenery in Acadia National Park,[35]and the Sargasso Sea Declaration.[19]
Shaw was Executive Producer of the 2011 gender-bending period film “Albert Nobbs”[36]for which Close received her sixth Oscars nomination in 2012.[37]
He is the author of the 2024 book “Wave Making”[38]
The Arts
[edit]Shaw is a patron of the Arts and was founder of the David E Shaw & family Sculpture Park at the Portland Museum of Art.[39]
He has served on the Portland Museum of Art’s Board of Corporators.[39]
Personal life
[edit]Shaw’s second marriage was to Actress Glenn Close in 2006 . They separated “mutually and amicably” in 2015. [37]
