Comment: You have misunderstood how to use sources. One example is for "City and Guilds qualifications" where you have a link to what they are. We don't want that, it must be a source that indicates that he studied that. You also don't list everything, this is not a CV. Ldm1954 (talk) 02:07, 10 May 2025 (UTC)

David Ian Birch (born 1950.[1]) BA (Hons) D.Phil., is a retired academic, holding both British and Australian citizenship.[2] He was formerly Professor and Chair of Literature and Communication Studies and founding Director of the Corporate Citizenship Research Unit at Deakin University[3], Victoria, Australia and Inaugural Professor of Communication & Media Studies, Central Queensland University[4], Queensland, Australia.[5] His research and teaching covered many areas of language, linguistics,[6]communication studies,[7] literature and drama,in both worldwide[8] and Singaporean contexts most particularly focusing on media,[9] literary stylistics,[10] critical linguistics, discourse analysis,[11] cultural studies[12] and cultural politics[13] and is now focussed on the language, style and spirituality of ecclesiastical Latin.[14]
Early Life
[edit]Birch was born in the St. Ann's area of Nottingham, England[15]. He attended the Blue Bell Hill Primary/Junior School[16]s and the Mundella Grammar School, leaving there prematurely at age fifteen, in 1966, to train as an apprentice chef with Trust House Forte Ltd., studying City and Guilds qualifications[17] first at North Staffs Technical College in Stoke on Trent[18] and then at the Ipswich Civic College[19]. In late 1968 he returned to Nottinghamshire to study GCE 'O' Levels at West Notts Technical College[20], Mansfield, and then further 'O' and 'A' Levels at the Jesuit Campion House College, Osterley, London[21]
Academic Life
[edit]Birch completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English Language at the University of Sheffield, completing an Honours Dissertation on the Language of 14th Century English Mysticism in 1977 and a D.Phil. on Linguistic Style and Homogeneity in a Reappraisal of St Thomas More's Polemics, 1528–1534[22] at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of York, UK[23] in 1980.
He then took up a position as Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences[24], National University of Singapore, establishing a particular interest and active participation in Singapore theatre[25], and in 1985 moved to Murdoch University in Western Australia as Lecturer in Communication Studies and English and Comparative Literature, becoming Senior Lecturer in English and Comparative Literature in 1988[26]. In 1993 he was appointed to a full Professorial Chair as the Inaugural Professor of Communication and Media Studies, Central Queensland University, Queensland[27], Australia, serving also as President of the Academic Board from 1995 and in 1996 as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) before leaving to take up the Professorial Chair of Literary and Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts, Deakin University[28], Victoria, Australia, serving also (beginning in 1998) as the Founding Director of the Corporate Citizenship Research Unit, Deakin University[29] until taking early retirement from all posts in 2010.
He has served on the editorial boards of fifteen international journals[30] and has published[31] seven single-authored books, three monographs, edited two additional books[32] and was the long-time general editor of three major international journals, was editor of eight special issues of various journals, and four conference proceedings. He has published chapters[33] in forty-six books, as well as articles in forty-seven refereed journals[34] and thirty-seven other journals/magazines, together with a variety of book reviews and other media and journalism pieces.
He was the keynote/invited speaker[35] at over one hundred and fifty national and international conferences, convened twelve major conferences, gave papers at over sixty other conferences and has written/contributed to over eighty industry reports[36]. In his last years as an active academic, he raised over $A3 million in personal research funding[37], successfully supervised seventeen PhDs[38], fourteen Masters by research theses and fourteen Honours dissertations.
Birch has several publications on his areas of expertise and interest. His most recent publication is a Latin book on prayer:

Birch retired in 2008 and has been pursuing his interest in cooking, creative writing, prayers and gardening.
