Hanumant Singh (born c. 1965) is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northeastern University, with a courtesy appointment in mechanical and industrial engineering and affiliation with Khoury College of Computer Sciences. He is also affiliated with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Institute for Experiential Artificial Intelligence. Singh serves as the director of the Institute for Experiential Robotics and is known for his pioneering work in underwater and field robotics, especially in robotic sensing, mapping, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) in extreme and marine environments.[1]

Biography

Singh earned his Ph.D. in 1995 from the MITWoods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program in Oceanography and Applied Ocean Science and Engineering. Afterward, he served on the technical staff at WHOI for over two decades. In 2016, he joined Northeastern University as a faculty member in the electrical and computer engineering department, also holding a courtesy appointment in mechanical and industrial engineering and affiliation with Khoury College of Computer Sciences. He is a senior IEEE member and a member of the American Geophysical Union.

Research and Work

  • Field robotics & Marine applications – Singh leads a lab developing robotic platforms like the Seabed AUV and Jetyak autonomous surface vehicle, now deployed worldwide for scientific exploration. His research includes high-resolution optical/acoustic sensing in marine and polar settings, and aerial geospatial mapping.
  • Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) – His group investigates SLAM in challenging environments (underwater, polar regions), working on sensor arrangements (e.g., OASIS 2024), light-field front-ends for VSLAM, and stereo camera calibration for underwater imaging.[2]
  • Expeditions – He has participated in 50–60 oceanographic expeditions globally, focusing on geology, biology, archaeology, and polar studies.[3]
