Magophonia was a festival that the Persians in the Achaemenid period (550–330 BC) celebrated annually to commemorate the killing of Gaumata and the ascension of Darius the Great to the throne.
Following the Overthrowing of Darius the Great and his allies against the Magi Gaumata and his execution, the Persians annually held a festival on the anniversary of the coup. During this celebration, Persians would bring their drawn daggers out of their homes, and the Magi would hide in their houses to avoid being targeted by the Persians. Our information regarding this festival originates from Herodotus and Ctesias. This festival has also been reported by Josephus Flavius.[1] Agathias provides an interpretation of this story that indicates he had historical knowledge from earlier times, but in his own era, this festival was no longer held.[2]
