Mazher Moin is a Pakistani television director noted for his "new wave"[1] approach to drama, which has been characterized by artistic and realistic portrayals of low-middle class themes. With a career spanning over two decades, Moin has directed critically and commercially successful works, often exploring themes of the lower-middle class, disability, and marginalized communities with significant social commentary.
Themes and Social Commentary
[edit]Moin's work is characterized by humour, realism and social commentary. He has been described as a "new wave" director, because of his departure from the melodramatic portrayals of wealthy characters prevalent in Pakistani television, by focusing on the lives of the low-middle class "sans artifice".[1] Moin works with a diverse range of societal issues, from sensitive subjects such as homosexuality and transgender issues, to the concerns and experiences of minorities and marginalized communities in Karachi, like Christians and Hindus.[1]
Professional Collaborations
[edit]Moin's career is marked by several significant and recurring collaborations.
His oldest artistic partnership is with writer Fasih Bari Khan,[2] with whom he has worked on numerous projects, including "Quddusi Sahab Ki Bewah" "Burns Road Ki Nilofer," "Saraye Ghat Ki Farzana," "Faltu Larki" and "Kitna Satatay Ho". Fasih Bari Khan is known for his bold exploration of social issues and their collaborations often explore these themes with a blend of comedy and realism.[3] Khan explains that "Mazhar and l are childhood friends. Our projects are born over a random cup of tea,"[4] Moin has directed many of Bari's screenplays, a collaboration that has produced "the most successful of his works" and "truly original works," with Burns Road ki Nilofer being described in 2012 as a "zenith of their collaboration".[5]
Hina Dilpazeer is an unorthodox actress and has worked with Moin in "Quddusi Sahab Ki Bewah"[6] and "Burns Road Ki Nilofer". Dilpazeer's versatility and comedic talents have meshed successfully with Moin's style.[7] She gained recognition for portraying more than 12 different characters in Moin's directed play "Quddusi Sahab Ki Bewah", where she also contributed to costume and make-up design.[8]
Moin has also established a strong professional relationship with the production house 7th Sky Entertainment, led by Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi. He has directed several commercially successful series under their banner, including "Dil Awaiz" "Shahrukh Ki Saliyan," "Bajjo," "Nisa," and "Thori Sazish Thori Mudakhlat". This repeated collaboration indicates that Moin is a trusted director for their mainstream television drama productions.
Moin has expressed that working with 7th Sky Entertainment allowed him to "work openly and showcase his full potential".[9][10]
